This Thanksgiving, we at Build Up Companies take time to reflect on gratitude, community, and the values that guide our work. Rest & Recuperation: Supporting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ Leaders in Their Pursuit of Social Justice

Last September, our Senior Counsel & Vice President of Strategic Planning, Ajani Husbands, served as a speaker at the 1st Annual Global Artivism Conference in Pretoria, South Africa. The Global Artivism Conference is sponsored in part by our TCLF client Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Ajani spoke on the intersection between artists, nonprofits, and intellectual property rights. Given that nonprofits often engage with artists either on a contractual or a grantmaking basis, it is imperative for all parties to understand intellectual property rights and how they operate under each type of agreement. Moreover, Ajani emphasized the importance of ensuring an equitable process that protects the interests of the nonprofit and the artist, and also ensures that artists understand their rights and are in a position to effectively advocate for their own needs.
