Super complementary initiatives, building one upon the other and natural extensions of the many successes of Nigeria's NFIS. Thanks to our partners ConsumerCentriX and Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a very big shout out the Financial Inclusion team at CBN for your vision and tenacity in keeping gender front and centre Temitope Akin-Fadeyi, Sophia Abu, Paul I. CBN, Partners host 2nd IFIC in Lagos; unveil We-Fi Code, WFI Dashboard and Roadmap for FDPs. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso at the ongoing International Financial Inclusion Conference (IFIC) 2024, reaffirmed the CBN's commitment to financial inclusion - the bedrock on which "national economic growth and development can be achieved", and a pathway towards elevating Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy! Here are some highlights of the Governor's speech: Since the launch of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) in 2012, the CBN in collaboration with partner agencies has championed policies and initiatives to reduce financial exclusion. These initiatives have been guided by the vision of ensuring every Nigerian has access to affordable financial services, from basic savings accounts to micro pension and microinsurance offered by other regulated non-bank financial institutions to digital payment platforms. The CBN is keen on ensuring its financial inclusion policies and initiatives address the peculiar access to finance barriers for underserved populations, particularly women, youth, and MSMEs. In line with its efforts to deepen financial inclusion, the CBN recently introduced new minimum capital requirements for banks. This strategic move ensures that banks are well-capitalized, enabling them to take on greater risks, particularly in underserved markets. With stronger capital bases, banks can provide more loans and financial products to MSMEs, rural communities, and other vulnerable segments that have previously struggled to access formal financial services. By enabling banks to extend more credit to MSMEs, we enhance job creation and productivity. Furthermore, with increased capital, banks can invest in technology and innovation, crucial for driving digital financial services such as mobile money and agent banking. Financial inclusion has the potential to unlock significant economic growth, particularly through the empowerment of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), women and other vulnerable segments of the population. SMEs are responsible for over 80% of employment in Nigeria, yet many struggle to access the credit needed for expansion. The CBN has made significant strides in promoting financial inclusion for women and youth, particularly through frameworks aimed at closing gender gaps and regulatory support for digital platforms that offer easier access to financial services for these vulnerable groups. Nigeria’s growing mobile phone penetration provides an unprecedented opportunity to expand access to financial services. Interoperable payment platforms have enabled millions of Nigerians to send payments, save, and access credit without traditional bank accounts. #IFIC24 #IFIC2024 #FinancialInclusion

#ICYMI 🚀 Our latest #FintechFriday session, “Fintechs Financing WMSMEs,” highlighted impactful strategies and lessons from fintech leaders driving real change for women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (#WMSMEs). We were joined by three fantastic speakers: - Carmia Lureman-Norton, Head of Strategic Delivery & CX at JUMO - Lucinda Revell, Co-Founder and COO of Boost Capital - Thea Olivier, Executive Operations at Retail Capital SA by TymeBank They shared how their organizations attract and finance WMSMEs, overcoming the key barriers women entrepreneurs face in accessing finance. Through their work, they’re helping bridge the $1.7 trillion financing gap that limits growth for women entrepreneurs globally. Over 400 million women entrepreneurs worldwide lack access to the capital they need to scale their businesses and create jobs. Addressing this gap could add an incredible $5-6 trillion to the global economy and unlock enormous growth opportunities for financial service providers.
