Student & Trainee Spotlight Time! Meet Camerin Rencken, a PhD Candidate at the University of Washington and with the University of Washington Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program. Research interests: supporting school shooting survivors, evaluating the impact of firearm policies, causal inference in observational studies, and integrating qualitative methods within epidemiological frameworks. Why research firearms? The loss of a close friend to firearm violence profoundly shifted my academic focus. This experience made me recognize the widespread impact of firearm violence on communities and underscored the need to address it as both a public health issue and a social justice concern. Firearm violence is an equity issue, disproportionately affecting marginalized populations. This drives and motivates me daily, inspiring me to apply my training to a complex problem that requires a collaborative, community-driven response across disciplines and sectors. Through my research, I aim to honor my friend’s memory by working toward solutions that prevent others from experiencing similar loss and injustice.

A goal of both the Research Society for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms and the annual conference is to nurture and support the next generation of researchers in this field. We are excited to start introducing you all to the amazing students and trainees ready to make an impact! First up, Brielle Savage, a PhD student with Rutgers University Newark and the Rutgers Gun Violence Research Center. Research Interests: Firearm-Related Homicide Survivorship, Firearm Violence, Juvenile Delinquency, Illicit Firearm Carrying Why research firearms? I My lived experience both professionally and personally, give me a unique perspective on the impact of firearm violence. I chose to pursue this avenue of research because I have witnessed the immediate and lasting effects firearm violence has on individuals and entire communities. I’ve seen how communities are left to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of violence; as well as the barriers and challenges that individuals are presented with in the aftermath of violence. My hope is that my research will help inform policies that address the root causes of firearm violence, leading to programs and funding that support healing and foster a culture of health and equity, particularly in marginalized communities most affected by firearm violence.
