We held our Special Session: Author Meets Critics: What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms — with author, Jonathan Metzl, MD, PhD, Vanderbilt University, Daniel Webster, Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, and Shani Buggs, UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP). In a provocative new book, What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms, authored by Jonathan Metzl, MD, PhD, Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry and the Director of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt, argues that public health strategies from “the tobacco wars, the seatbelt wars, or other last-century profits-versus-people contests” are ill-suited to the national debate around guns, which are rooted so deeply in political identity. "Guns represent different kinds of pathogens than did cigarettes or cars.” #2024FirearmResearchConf
