“This is not a future of food I will accept. Nor should you.” 📢 Remember that The New York Times op-ed claiming factory farms are the future of food? Our Executive Director, Anna Lappé, pushed back in a powerful Letter to the Editor—dismantling the myth that industrial agriculture is our only path forward. She shines a spotlight on its true costs: #biodiversityloss, environmental devastation, and harm to workers and communities. Anna’s voice joins many others, underscoring why advocacy for sustainable, agroecological food systems is more urgent than ever. 🌱 Read the Letter to the Editor: https://lnkd.in/ex8anzUn #FoodSystems #Sustainability #Agroecology

Late last year, The New York Times published “Sorry, but This is the Future of Food,” an opinion essay by Michael Grunwald. The piece is the final essay in “What to Eat on a Burning Planet”, a series that claims to explore bold ideas to secure our food supply. In the essay, Grunwald holds up outdated narratives and “solutions” while encouraging us to embrace industrial food models as the only way to feed a growing human population. It will come as no surprise to most of you reading this that the Agroecology Fund (and many partners and allies) were terribly disappointed in this narrow, and incorrect view about the future of food. Never pass up the opportunity for healthy debate! When these false narratives are given editorial space, it’s a chance to push back and help readers understand viable alternatives. With good science behind it, #agroecology is the future of food. Agroecology Fund Co-Director, Daniel Moss submitted a response, as did many, many people who are close to agroecology movements. Although our letter was not published, we share it as a way to deepen the conversation about the importance of investing in grassroots agroecology movements around the world. We were however thrilled to see that on January 4, 2025, The New York Times published “Changing How We Grow Our Food: Readers disagree with an essay about factory farms.” Agroecology Fund partner and ally, Anna Lappé, Executive Director, Global Alliance for the Future of Food had her response published. Factory farms are our best hope for feeding the planet, according to Michael Grunwald in the New York Times (December 15 2024). “These systems are “efficient,” only if you ignore their true costs — to our health, environment, climate and more”, Global Alliance for the Future of Food Director Anna Lappé responds. Read Anna’s, and other Letters to the Editor: https://lnkd.in/ex8anzUn These Letters reference the “myriad detrimental effects of industrial agriculture beyond the environmental consequences” and highlight the multiple benefits of embracing alternatives to factory farms.

We were delighted to host this Regional Dialogue with Harpinder Sandhu and Cerasela Stancu for Australia and New Zealand - part of our True Cost Accounting Dialogue Series and Summit. We are excited to see where this influential group of stakeholders go next - thank you all for attending. If you are interested in joining this working group and contributing to scaling implementation of TCA in Australia and New Zealand, please reach out to Harpinder and Cerasela.
Changing our measure of success 📈 Food is expensive, yet there are multiple hidden costs well beyond what we pay at the supermarket checkout. If we measure and account for the true cost of food production on our health system, our air, water, animals and soils, and the financial and social costs to our growers, farmers, taxpayers and consumers – what insight would that bring? What reform would that drive? This week, EnviroStrat Sustainability Director Cerasela Stancu co-led a webinar with Harpinder Sandhu of Federation University and Rosanna Crawford of TCA Accelerator which focused on strengthening ties between Australia and New Zealand to bring true cost accounting to the fore. True Cost Accounting (TCA) incentivises a shift to more sustainable forms of food production that benefits the environment and human health. It’s not a mainstream concept – yet. Alongside policymakers and business leaders, enablers include organic and regenerative farmers and growers, individuals and consumers. Investors & financial institutions can build on financing principles for food and land use, leveraging frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, climate disclosures and GHG emissions markets. The webinar drew wide interest with an initial focus for New Zealand on some pressing issues: regulatory changes to gene technology, land use transition, nature markets and climate and nature disclosures, access to data and the still-evolving methodologies of true cost accounting. As we develop and implement an action plan to bring true cost accounting to New Zealand and Australia, we left the webinar feeling emboldened. We discussed how to help governments, society and philanthropy magnify impact, and ways in which individuals, researchers and business leaders who share a belief in the importance of true cost accounting can prioritise their contributions. Contact Us for a recording of the webinar. Want to Join our Dialogue? We'd love you to leave your thoughts.
