As in other organizations, polarization is increasingly impacting Extension's ability to effectively serve communities. As a trusted source of information and support, Extension has an untapped potential to address division and lack of civility by building civic infrastructure and fostering constructive dialogue. A recent JOE article describes a pilot program, initiated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension in partnership with Braver Angels, that aimed to equip Extension professionals with the skills needed to bridge divides and promote civic engagement. This program, initially a one-off event, evolved into a series of workshops focused on research-based skills for building bridges. The authors delve into the series' structure and content, its goals, and the positive impacts it had on participants. Their findings? Extension may have the unique mission, capacity, opportunity, and responsibility to engage in skill-building for Public Issues Education, and could play a vital role in fostering civic engagement, bridging divides, and promoting a more inclusive and equitable society.
