The Washington Post: From the ER to your house: Why hospitals are treating patients at home Fenit Nirappil The hospital-at-home movement has proliferated during the past decade, reshaping how acute care is delivered and health systems are financed. But nurses and others raise concerns about whether health companies will shutter or gut hospitals and deprive patients of regular, immediate in-person care. If Congress does not act before the end of the year, patients cared for #athome through these programs must be discharged or returned to the hospital on December 31, 2024. https://lnkd.in/gGzqPWJU

Advocating for policy that enables patients and providers to choose clinical services at home.
About us
Moving Health Home (MHH) is a coalition made up of stakeholders working to change federal and state policy to enable the home to be a clinical site of care. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, disparate groups of health care innovators sought to drive more care to the home, but competing policy priorities, coverage debates and the intractable nature of fee-for-service payment made progress difficult. Today, we have an opportunity to shape the future of health care as policymakers, thought leaders, providers, health plans and patients absorb the lessons and experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. We don’t have to go back to our old normal. MHH members believe the home can and should be part of the future. The advent of widespread use of telehealth, remote patient monitoring, virtual disease prevention and disease management, caregiver support, medical record sharing, and new practices by providers and patients can make this possible. Home-based care affords the opportunity to not only deliver important clinical care, but also approach care in a more wholistic way. Fall risk assessments, nutrition evaluations, medication reconciliation, caregiver support needs, functional limitations can all be evaluated more fully in a home-based environment. New remote monitoring innovations can also equip patients and caregivers with the ability to keep their providers updated on their conditions.

Happy Halloween from the MHH team! Confused about the end of year state of play for the hospital at home waiver? No tricks here! We break it down for you: The House Ways and Means Committee advanced a legislative package, which includes the five-year extension of the hospital at home waiver in May. In September, the House Energy & Commerce Committee advanced its legislative package, which also includes the five-year extension, out of Committee. ⏭️What's Next?⏭️ Both House committees are working to resolve any differences between its respective bill text, both which include the five-year extension. After resolving differences, the final bill will head to the House for consideration. The Senate, on a separate timeline, still needs to undergo its own process. Home Health Care News: Study Shows Caregivers, Patients Prefer Hospital-At-Home Model https://lnkd.in/gZ3BK4fi Audrie Martin, M.A. The rise of in-home alternatives to traditional hospital care is raising concerns about the potential strain these models may place on family caregivers. Under the hospital-at-home (HaH) model, it is essential to ensure that caregivers are not inadvertently overwhelmed with additional tasks and responsibilities that exceed their capacity and resources. Moving Health Home member DispatchHealth recently conducted a study analyzing the impact of the HaH model on caregivers’ lives and well-being. Roughly 95% of respondents strongly preferred in-home care over the traditional hospital setting, with 68% stating a solid preference for hospital-level care in the home. “Home care elevates the quality of life across the board,” Patrick Kneeland said. “Whether it’s being surrounded by loved ones, keeping pets nearby, or creating a care plan that fits the patient’s day-to-day reality. It’s about making care more personal and realistic, which patients and caregivers appreciate the most.”

Barron's: Harris Wants More Senior Care in the Home Joe Light Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday unveiled a proposal that the campaign says will allow more seniors to age at home. Last year, Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Adrian Smith (R-NE) introduced a bill that would permit Medicare to pay for up to 12 hours a week of personal-care services for up to 90 days a year. https://lnkd.in/eyEBsAZP Among the bill’s supporters is Moving Health Home. “We are thrilled” with the new plan, said Krista Drobac, who founded the group and has lobbied Congress on its behalf. “To achieve the goal of giving patients the option to receive expanded care at home, personal-care services are essential, especially for those who do not have a full-time family caregiver,” Drobac wrote in an email. https://lnkd.in/dBu-_ymX
