I got the opportunity to view a screening of iF, A Foundation for Radical Possibility's film "Diminished Returns: The Black Wealth Gap in Washington, D.C." a few weeks ago, where Chiara Frechette and I took a lot of notes. Some key points that resonated with me: 1. It is crucial to flip the narrative from charity to justice when wealth was not given, but stolen and extracted. 2. The story of DC is the story of this country. And this country has a stake in the fight for DC statehood. 3. As Temi F. Bennett, Esq. raised during the post-screening panel, how are we funding to win? Being in the giving circle space, I think this applies not only to funders but also to people who are looking to move their financial resources meaningfully. We love to see trust-based philanthropy in a bibliography 🧐 The day after GivingTuesday, it felt so energizing to step into a classroom at American University and hear from students about their philanthropic journeys + see their pledges and commitments to continue practicing philanthropy! This year, the Next Gen Giving Circle has collectively decided to grant $30,000 to ten incredible organizations working to advance economic justice for BIPOC individuals and families in the Greater Washington region! $25,000 will be given to our five 2024 grantees. As part of our commitment to trust-based philanthropy practices, we will also be giving $5,000 in multi-year general operating support to our five 2023 grantees.
