What do you do with an 80-foot Sitka spruce after the holiday? It won't fit in your mulcher, and you can't leave it at the curb. The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be milled into lumber and returned to the indigenous tribes of Alaska. It's proof that a tree can have many lives and contribute to a circular economy. Spruce Wayne sequestered carbon while growing in the forest. Then, he served as the People's Tree. As lumber, he will continue to store carbon and serve as needed building material. Our forests will care for us if we care for our forests. #itcomesfromatree #realChristmastrees #uscapitolchristmastree #sustainability #circulareconomy

In 1920, this lookout in Payette National Forest, Idaho, would have been the perfect place to recover from peopling. If you find it appealing, you may make a terrific fire lookout. Technology is reducing the number of active towers. However, there are still opportunities for volunteer lookouts. Contact the Forest Fire Lookout Association for more information. When life gets too peopley, you can reserve a lookout tower for an overnight stay: https://bit.ly/4h92Ez4. From midnight kisses to collard greens, there are a lot of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day traditions. Some trees symbolize good luck for the new year, too — plant juniper, holly, boxwood, or bay for long life and to protect against bad luck. Post-holiday reminder: opt for a broom, not a vacuum. Sweep up those needles with a broom instead of using your vacuum cleaner. Your real Christmas tree was stunning. When it comes time to say goodbye, don't clog up your vacuum with discarded needles. Remember, your tree can have a second life as a habitat for wildlife or as mulch. You can't do that with an artificial tree. #itcomesfromatree #realChristmastrees #helpfulhints

Did you know New York City has a holiday that follows Christmas, and it's not Boxing Day or Kwanzaa? It's Mulchfest. From December 26 to January 12, people can drop off their trees to be chipped and used as mulch for city parks. On Chipping Weekend, they can take home a bag of mulch for their garden or a street tree. Houston, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and Baltimore are only a few cities that also mulch Christmas trees. Look for a program near you. Photo credit: Forest History Society. #throwbackThursday #mulchfest #chippingweekend #exTREEmelysmart

If you've ever stepped on a fallen Christmas tree needle and deeply regretted it, it was probably a spruce tree. Whether white, Norway, or blue, spruce trees are famous for their stabby needles. However, they do have that classic Christmas tree shape. If your heavy ornaments keep sliding to the floor, you should get a spruce next year. They have excellent branch strength. 💪🏻 If you're a teacher who would like their students to learn more about the value of trees, click here for a free Truth About Trees Kit today: https://bit.ly/RequestAKit! #teacherTuesday #education #realChristmastrees
