What do you do with an 80-foot Sitka spruce after the holiday? It won't fit in your mulcher, and you can't leave it at the curb. The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be milled into lumber and returned to the indigenous tribes of Alaska. It's proof that a tree can have many lives and contribute to a circular economy. Spruce Wayne sequestered carbon while growing in the forest. Then, he served as the People's Tree. As lumber, he will continue to store carbon and serve as needed building material. Post-holiday reminder: opt for a broom, not a vacuum. Sweep up those needles with a broom instead of using your vacuum cleaner. Your real Christmas tree was stunning.
