About us
The Oncio app is the first free app available to anyone affected by cancer that aims to empower you to practically put integrative oncology tools and strategies into action. Our aim is to empower you with an evidence-informed toolkit that is practical and easy to use and cuts through the noise of conflicting information of variable quality and relevance to you. Oncio CIC (Community Interest Company) was co-founded by Dr Nina Fuller-Shavel and Dr Penny Kechagioglou with the main aim of providing high quality app-based resources for people with cancer and healthcare professionals and supporting best clinical practice and research in integrative oncology. Integrative oncology is a person-centred branch of healthcare that aims to rationally synthesise the best of conventional medicine with evidence-informed nutrition and lifestyle medicine, psycho-emotional wellbeing and complementary medicine to support better quality of life and whole person resilience, minimise the side effects of treatment and improve clinical outcomes. We believe that integrative oncology should be part of the standard of care, and Oncio CIC has been created to support this mission.

What is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)? Clinical EFT is an evidence-based stress reduction technique that uses elements of cognitive therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE), with physical stimulation of acupressure points. EFT is often referred to as ‘tapping’, as it uses a two-finger tapping process on known acupuncture points. EFT allows us to release the intensity of uncomfortable feelings like hurt, anxiety, guilt, fear, overwhelm, or anger and transform them. EFT can also transform the recurring thoughts and beliefs underlying our emotional experiences. Using tapping may not only reduce stress immediately but may also allow us to safely process memories that may have contributed to the intensity of the current stress response. Head to the General Information Hub on the Oncio app today, which is packed full of informative and comprehensive articles, including information on EFT and other modalities/therapies used in integrative cancer care. #EFT #emotionalfreedomtechnique #efttapping

Our two week Mindfulness program is designed to support our app users to navigate their cancer journey. The program explores a selection of meditation techniques that are focused on calming, stabilizing mind and body, building a deeper connection, and cultivating more love and kindness towards ourselves as you experience one of the most challenging journeys. During the meditation practices, the focus is on one particular technique called ‘focused attention’, where we place our attention on our natural breath, without manipulating it or changing it in any way. We often take a few deep breaths at the beginning to help the mind and body relax as it can affect our parasympathetic nervous system. It is usually safe to use meditation alongside your cancer treatment - we would also recommend you talk to your consultant or doctor if you have any concerns. Download the app today to discover our diverse range of interactive programs. #cancersurvivor #cancerthriver

What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your awareness and attention to your present moment experience in a non-judgemental way (Kabat-Zinn 2013). When you are mindful, you bring your awareness to what you are experiencing moment to moment via your five senses – physical sensations, sights, sounds, smells and taste – as well as to your thoughts, emotions, urges and behaviours. This inner landscape is ever changing and impermanent. Mindfulness can help you to meet yourself and your experience with kindness and curiosity, lessening resistance, stress and struggle to the difficult and helping to calm your mind, body and emotions (Feldman, Kuyken and Segal 2019). Much of the time people which spend a lot of time in their heads, thinking about both the future and the past and are seldom living with a sense of embodied presence (Williams and Penman 2011, Feldman) . The General Information Hub on the Explore screen of the Oncio app is full of informative and comprehensive articles, including an article on Mindfulness written by Dr Caroline Hoffman. In each article we provide for a specific therapy or approach in integrative oncology, we offer expert input and direct people to appropriate professional organisations. Head to the app to learn more and read our latest article. #integrativeoncology #digitalhealth #cancercare
