If you think of the perfect Space-StartUp location, does Baden-Württemberg come to your mind? 🚀 We had a great time at the Raumfahrtkonferenz 2024, where Baden-Württemberg showed how its strong automotive roots are being leveraged to push the boundaries of aerospace innovation. THE aerospace LÄND initiative is a great example of how established industries can drive progress in new fields like space. What stood out to us the most was Claus Paal's (IHK Region Stuttgart) inspiring call for more bold visionaries and entrepreneurs to take risks and make an impact in space technology. It’s a reminder that shaping the future of space requires a brave mindset and determination. We also loved connecting with student groups like Small Satellite Student Society of the University of Stuttgart - KSat e.V., WARR, and Bundesverband studentischer Raumfahrt e.V. - BVSR, and seeing the incredible projects they’re working on. Plus, exchanging ideas with researchers like Claas Olthoff and Tharshan Maheswaran brought valuable insights into the field of in-orbit servicing. A special thank you to Sebastian Klaus (ATMOS Space Cargo) and Mario K. (HyImpulse) for sharing their inspiring startup journeys. And of course, a big shoutout to Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt - Lilienthal-Oberth e.V. (DGLR) and Forum LRBW for organizing such a fantastic event! We also had the honor of meeting Matthias Maurer — a highlight of the day and a great way to close out such an inspiring day. We participated in the Start-up WOW Challenge in Aalen and got to know many inspiring entrepreneurs and innovators! 🎉 Congratulations to meinhaus.digital for taking first place in the pitches—well-deserved! 👏 We also want to give a special mention to Matthias Scheller from Eco Elio, whose environmentally friendly sunscreen left a lasting impression on us - because did you know, that most conventional sunscreens still contain liquid microplastics, such as acrylates and polymers, which have harmful environmental impacts? From June to October, the ESA Green Space Challenge brought PeriSpace to life, introducing us to one another and allowing us to form a cohesive team driven by a shared passion for driving forward sustainable space exploration. Throughout the challenge, we gained insights that would be valuable for any new space-tech startup: 1️⃣ Build from the Inside Out: Developing a strong, cohesive team with a shared mission has been central to our progress. Knowing and amplifying each other's strengths has allowed us to build a foundation for future growth. 2️⃣ Understand the Market Landscape: Identifying customer needs (e.g. by design-thinking) early on can position a startup to create solutions that are both impactful and finely tuned to industry demands, driving faster adaptation in the market. 3️⃣ Stay Scalable & Sustainable: Starting with sustainable practices embedded in your strategy and tech ensures that growth and impact go hand-in-hand. With fresh insights we’re ready to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable space environment. The space sector has changed.... a lot! 🚀 "All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." – Arthur Schopenhauer, quoted by Tiago Soares during his keynote at the Clean Space Days Conference. As Tiago leads initiatives at ESA to bring awareness to the rapidly changing space sector, we see the urgency of addressing space sustainability. The space sector has evolved, with satellite traffic skyrocketing and companies like Starlink planning constellations of up to 42,000 satellites. However, the increasing payloads and satellite launches heighten the risk of collisions and space debris, presenting critical sustainability challenges for space operations. As Tiago mentioned, we are now moving from stage 2 to 3 of this transformation. A recent ESA study reveals that clearing space debris is recognized as the number one priority by stakeholders. Would you have expected this? Practical ways to achieve sustainability in space 🎯 At PeriSpace, we use Design Thinking to explore the challenges of space sustainability. During the empathize phase, we conducted empathy interviews, which helped us define an important problem: How can we develop and implement cost-effective solutions that maximize spacecraft utilization while reducing the risk for the space environment? 💡Active Debris Removal (ADR) is vital for long-term sustainability; however, we found that In-Orbit Servicing (IOS) offers a more practical opportunity to build a strong business case and address this problem effectively. This understanding inspired our focus on In-Orbit Servicing —a transformative concept that could extend satellite lifespans, improve operational efficiency, and offer cost-effective solutions to sustain the industry. Our Relocation and Station-Keeping services aim to help satellite operators achieve long-term sustainability, driving innovation in space exploration and ensuring the future of space benefits us all.
