Clinical trials, or interventional studies, are conducted with volunteers. They aim to test in humans the safety and efficacy of new methods of prevention, screening, diagnosis, or treatment of a disease, which were already tested in preclinical tests (conducted on animals, cells or computer models). Clinical trials are carefully designed and reviewed and must be approved before starting. Biomedical clinical trials are divided into 4 stages: - Phase I studies are conducted with a small group of volunteers, to evaluate the safe dosage range of a drug. - Phase II studies test treatments that were found to be safe in Phase I on a larger group of human subjects. They aim to assess the intervention's efficacy and detect possible adverse effects. - Phase III studies, conducted on interventions that performed well in Phase II, are the final stage before approving the new treatment. They are carried out with hundreds or thousands of volunteers in many regions and countries. - After Phase III, a country can approve the new medical approach for clinical use. However, it is still monitored in the Phase IV study, or pharmacovigilance, to identify possible rare side effects over a longer period. SAGITTARIUS is a Phase III clinical trial that may transform colon cancer treatment by using liquid biopsy, an innovative approach in precision medicine, to tailor post-surgical treatment for patients with locoregional colon cancer (high-risk stage II and operable stage III).
