🔋– Hydropower plants with pumped storage can work as giant batteries, storing energy for when it’s needed. This is crucial with the growing use of renewable energy that need reliable storage, and can help improve the flexibility and resilience of the EU energy grid, says Surya Teja Kandukuri, senior researcher at NORCE. 🌍A team of NORCE-researchers are working together with colleagues from 21 partners in 8 different countries to improve and develop operations for pumped storage hydropower in the EU-project STOR-HY. The goal is to ✅enhance flexibility and reliability, ✅minimize negative environmental impacts, ✅and improve social acceptance of hydropower. 💬– One thing we want to do, is to enhance the lifetime and reliability of components and equipment. Therefore, we are developing monitoring solutions for the hydropower equipment to improve transparency into the machine health. Simultaneously, we are developing a co-simulation environment for realizing complex digital twins for hydropower, explains Kandukuri. 💡At a pumped storage hydropower plant water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher one. When electricity is needed, the stored water is released back down to the lower reservoir, turning turbines to generate power. 🔹 Advancing hydropower in EU policy discussions🔹 Last week, representatives of STOR-HY and its sister project SHERPA, new solutions for hydropower plants attended a networking cocktail on 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥, organised by ETIP HYDROPOWER. The event brought together industry leaders, researchers and policy makers, including MEPs, to discuss the crucial role of hydropower in Europe’s 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 💧⚡ With a short presentation highlighting hydropower’s potential to 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬, the event provided key insights to support informed decision-making in upcoming EU policies. 📢 Our third speaker for the webinar “𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫: 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭” is Elena Vagnoni. Elena is the head of the research projects group at EPFL Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines and a lecturer in the EPFL Mechanical Engineering Section. She graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 2013 and earned her PhD in Mechanics at EPFL in 2018. Before her current role, she was a research assistant fellow at The Johns Hopkins University and a guest scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She is also the Vice-Coordinator of the European Energy Research Association joint programme on Hydropower. Elena will present the XFLEX HYDRO project, which aimed to enhance hydropower’s #flexibility services for the #grid. To achieve this, the project introduced an innovative methodology for integrating hydroelectric #technology solutions and analysing their impact on the modern power market.
