Trinity Church and Robin Hood have teamed up to share support for the City of Yes housing bill! Authored by Bea de la Torre and Rich Buery, the op-ed highlights the importance of the bill's passage to the many New Yorkers who are rent-burdened in the borough. By reforming zoning restrictions and creating thousands of jobs, the City of Yes has the potential to add as many as 109,000 new homes over the next decade. Alongside increased rental assistance, NYCHA capital repairs, and continued advocacy, New York City can address the housing crisis head-on. "Robin Hood, Trinity Church, and many other nonprofit organizations throughout the city remain committed to funding a comprehensive range of initiatives to build and preserve affordable housing and prevent evictions and homelessness. City of Yes is a critical step in the right direction, but we also need to expand access to eviction programs, unlock federal funding for capital repairs at public housing, and support the shelter providers who care for tens of thousands of New Yorkers every day. These goals should not be pitted against each other; they should work together with the goal of a fairer, more livable and more affordable city." https://lnkd.in/e5VSAHYg

Twenty-two alumni have already landed jobs.   “The week after finishing the program, I was working,” says program graduate Brianna. Doors are open to me now. I can live like a normal person.”   Learn more about our grantee’s important work: https://ow.ly/Ag3u50U3WsE

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are reminded of the fact that gender-based violence is pervasive and deadly. And yet, funding for this work is sorely underrepresented. Kavita Mehra, Executive Director of Trinity grantee Sakhi for South Asian Survivors, recently wrote about the lack of philanthropic support for this work. In an article featured in Inside Philanthropy, Kavita highlights that only 2% of private dollars go toward funding the well-being of women and girls. In Kavita's words, "It is time for philanthropy to recognize gender-based violence organizations as scalable and invest accordingly. These organizations are building the future by addressing intergenerational trauma and creating safer, healthier communities." We encourage funders from across the philanthropic spectrum to consider Kavita's message and ensure support for survivors increases. Read more at the link below: https://lnkd.in/eRi3zevU

The City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan, which the City Council is considering, has the potential to address the housing crisis in a significant way by allowing for incremental but meaningful increases in housing supply across all neighborhoods. Trinity Church strongly supports these reforms and sees them as essential to building a more equitable and sustainable future for all New Yorkers. We have a moral duty to address our city’s housing and homelessness crisis. City of Yes is an appropriate policy response to address this pressing moral imperative. Since 2019, Trinity has been a proud supporter of the Fund for Housing and Opportunity, providing $1.5M in grant funds. As FHO continues to expand, we celebrate their work of amplifying innovative solutions that will transform our housing system. Check out their recent update below and join the movement, because everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home.

📢 We are now the Fund for Housing and Opportunity! 📢 As our nation grapples with our collective identity—what do we value, and what binds us together?—the question of who among us has access to a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home is central to the conversations and political decisions ahead. Rental prices continue to increase, and too many lawmakers continue to prioritize strategies that punish people experiencing homelessness instead of solving the underlying issues. The moment we’re in further crystallizes how people and communities most affected by housing injustice must always be at heart of our work. While our core beliefs and purpose remain the same, those who know us may notice we now have a new name. The change is subtle but meaningful: We are now the Fund for Housing and Opportunity (FHO)—and we continue to be a leading collaborative working to protect renters and solve homelessness. Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g-5azZ36 This change—from “Funders” to “Fund”—is a part of our ongoing effort to modernize our operating structure to reflect FHO’s long-term and ongoing evolution from a funder-centric grantmaking model to more trust-based and restorative philanthropic practices. Through collaborative grantmaking, we can drive greater system-level impact, leverage shared resources, and amplify effective, innovative approaches to housing. We look forward to all we will continue to accomplish—together—toward a future where all renters are protected and secure in stable housing, and everyone has a safe place to call home.

Though our most recent Trinity Leadership Fellows cohort has departed NYC, our participants and alumni are still working hard. The Rev. Dr. Jarred Mercer, a Trinity Leadership Fellow alumnus, was featured in an uplifting piece by WBUR on his continued work to create housing opportunities for newly arrived Afghan families. With a dedicated team of parishioners at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newburyport, MA, Rev. Mercer demonstrates creativity and resourcefulness to move newly arrived migrants from a church basement to a permanent home. Here's what it looks like when a neighborhood comes together for the common good! 🤝 Trinity’s Neighborhood Council is an advisory group of nonprofit leaders, community organizers, policymakers, and residents who work with us to advance the well-being of Lower Manhattan. Last week, the Council’s 21 current members gathered for a dynamic conversation about the emotional well-being and mental health of our neighborhood. They then joined past Council members, partner organizations, and Trinity staff to make new connections and share their goals for the coming year. We’ve made amazing strides in the past, and we’re looking forward to all we can achieve together in the future!
