🔥 DO YOU REPORT DAMAGED FIRE DOORS? 🔥 During a recent site visit with the client team, we came across this damaged Fire Door. As well as the visibly compromised door blade, the fire safety glazing was completely missing, rendering this Fire Door useless. The building in question has storeys over 11 metres in height, and as such UK Regulations state that all Fire Doors (including self-closing devices) must be checked every three months, and high-traffic areas or frequently used doors should be checked more regularly, e.g. once a week/month as signs of wear will appear more quickly with increased use. We should all play a part in ensuring that Fire Doors perform as they should in the event of a fire, from the manufacturer, supplier and installer, through to the building owners and occupiers… knowing what to look out for and how to report it if it’s faulty, might just save lives. From manufacturers to building occupants, everyone has a role in ensuring a fire door functions properly in a fire emergency. Knowing the signs of a problem and how to address them can be lifesaving. Routine wear and tear can reduce the effectiveness of even certified doors, so it’s crucial to verify that your fire doors are as secure as they appear. Here are 5 things to check when buying – or maintaining – fire doors. CERTIFICATION - Is it fully certified to provide the best protection? APERTURES - Are the apertures a weak spot compromising performance? FITTING - Does it fit properly stopping smoke spreading? CLOSERS - Is the closer doing its job correctly? OPERATION - Does the door shut completely? Delve deeper into each of these considerations here: https://lnkd.in/eUAQPv79 #FDSW24 #FireSafety #RecogniseItReportIt

🔹 Did You Know? 🔹 In the UK, fire doors are required to have intumescent seals that expand when exposed to heat, helping to block smoke and flames. These seals are an essential part of a building’s fire safety plan, slowing down the spread of fire and creating safer escape routes. Fire doors are often overlooked, but they are one of the most crucial passive fire protection measures. Without the correct seals and installation, they cannot effectively protect against the rapid spread of smoke and fire—posing serious risks to occupants and property. 🔥 At Skyline Firestopping, we’re dedicated to ensuring that fire doors are up to code, from selecting the right materials to proper installation and maintenance. Our team provides solutions that help buildings comply with UK fire safety standards and improve overall safety. 💼 Want to learn more about fire door compliance or need expert assistance in fire stopping? Concerned about the fire safety of the building you're in? Keep an eye out for signs of a faulty fire door. Here's what to watch for: 1. Certification: Look for a label or plug on top (or sometimes on the side) of the door. 2. Gaps: Ensure the gaps around the top and sides of the door are consistently less than 4mm when closed. While the gap under the door can be slightly larger (up to 8mm), ideally, no light should pass through. 3. Seals: Check for intact intumescent seals around the door or frame, with no signs of damage. 4. Hinges: Confirm all hinges are securely fixed (typically three or more), with no missing or broken screws. 5. Closing properly: Ensure the door closes firmly onto the latch without sticking on the floor or frame. Fire doors are crucial for the safety of a building and its occupants. They help contain fire and smoke and compartmentalise a building reducing damage to both the building and the people inside, allowing more time for evacuation. Fire doors must be of the correct specification, installed to the required standard and maintained thereafter for the ongoing safety of all the occupants of the building. A fire door assembly not only includes the door leaf, but also the frame, doorstops, seals, hinges, and hardware. Using just one wrong component may have a detrimental effect on the performance of the fire door in a real live fire situation. This is why it’s paramount that certified professionals (like us) install your fire doors. This video demonstrates this first hand. The outside of the fire door barely shows any signs of fire or damage, but on the inside, the entire room and its contents are completely ruined by the fire. *Ensuring Fire Safety in Commercial Spaces: Key Smoke Detector Placement Guidelines* Fire protection is crucial; proper smoke detector placement can make all the difference. Here’s a quick guide for placing smoke detectors on ceilings with beams: Solid joists are treated like beams for spacing. Ceilings with shallow beams (<10% ceiling height) allow smooth spacing with detectors on ceilings or beams. Deeper beams (≥10% ceiling height): Beam spacing ≥40% ceiling height? Place detectors in each beam pocket. Beam spacing <40% ceiling height? Use smooth spacing parallel to beams and half-spacing perpendicular. Compliance with these guidelines ensures effective smoke detection in every corner of a room, enhancing safety measures for your building.
