The Academy of International Business Sustainability Shared Interest Group would like to thank Arif Z. for providing as a gift to our SIG the book "Sustainable Production and Trade: Perspectives from the Commonwealth" by the @Commonwealth Secretariat. We are looking forward to future collaborations with the @Commonwealth Research Network. For the special book dedication, please see the comments. Synopsis Sustainable production and trade are essential for the future of our planet as they provide critical pathways towards achieving long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability. The Commonwealth recognises that the challenges of climate change, loss of biodiversity and resource depletion require urgent action. For over three decades, the Commonwealth has been at the forefront of global sustainability efforts, leading the way and advocating for change. This book analyses sustainable production and trade practices in four key sectors: cocoa, fisheries, forestry, and textiles and garments. It seeks to shed light on the commendable sustainable practices employed by Commonwealth countries in these sectors, while also highlighting the challenges they face and the potential to make production and trade more sustainable in the future. A central message throughout the book is the need to prioritise support to small-scale producers, indigenous peoples and local communities, women and youths, and small and medium enterprises to help achieve these goals while improving their livelihoods. #aibsustainabilitysig #commonwealthsecretariat Shasha Zhao Maria Ilieva https://lnkd.in/eEiMvDBH

'Circular Economy and Agribusiness Development' The aim of this publication is to introduce the work of United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s Department of Agribusiness and how it supports circular economy development in the context of agroindustries. The publication highlights ways in which the agribusiness sector can facilitate the uptake of circular economy practices, creating shared prosperity, and contributing to improving environmental sustainability and advancing economic competitiveness in developing and middle-income countries. Sustainable development is increasingly linked to our ability to overcome the prevailing linear pattern of resource extraction, manufacture, consumption and final disposal of material waste into the environment, also known as the “take-make-waste” approach. The need for system innovation towards a circular economy is essential in this regard, based on the principles to design waste and pollution out of the system, to keep products and materials longer in use, and to regenerate natural ecosystems. Do voluntary sustainability standards improve socioeconomic and ecological outcomes? 💰 🐦 🌱 In our study that just got published in Ecological Economics, we explore how voluntary sustainability standards (e.g. Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance) affect Ghanaian smallholder cocoa farmers and the biodiversity on their cocoa plots. Our results indicate positive effects on socioeconomic outcomes. However, we did not find significant associations with ecological outcomes. A common concern is that gains in socioeconomic outcomes might come at the expense of the environment. Encouragingly, our study found no such trade-offs—suggesting that sustainability standards can support smallholder farmers (at least) without compromising the plot-level environment. It was fascinating – if also challenging – to undertake this scoping study for the FACT Dialogue, comparing sustainability concepts in the beef, cocoa, palm oil & timber sectors. The study aimed to identify shared priorities and gaps in how sustainable production of these commodities is defined, and to highlight some of the lessons that have been learnt from efforts to enhance sustainable production. It also sought to identify areas that should be prioritised for further international engagement. In reflecting on this work, what strikes me is the ongoing tendency within many sustainability initiatives to focus on technical issues at the expense of systemic issues. For example, as reflected in efforts to improve the sustainability of commodity production, while also seeking to increase overall production and consumption; and in initiatives to reduce farmer poverty through improving agricultural practices, while failing to address commodity prices. It is only through addressing such structural issues that the necessary transformative changes will take place. The report proposes a long list of potential priorities for further intergovernmental cooperation that I hope will provide useful food for thought. https://lnkd.in/g-53yh-p

Pleased to see this write-up in Economist Impact highlighting the important work we are pioneering at ofi - supporting biodiversity and building climate-resilient supply chains. Maintaining biodiversity is crucial for long-term sustainability and resilience in agriculture. The article showcases ofi as one of the first to publish a Natural Capital Profit & Loss statement and Balance Sheets. We are expanding our coverage, starting with Cocoa and recently including Coffee. Our focus now is on scaling our efforts further through incorporating Natural Capital Valuation into key decision-making processes. At ofi sustainability remains at the core of our business, and our Finance for Sustainability (F4S) team has been instrumental in bringing sustainability to life through numbers. We track our action and impact through our pioneering Integrated Impact Statement, initiated early on in 2017. Taking a proactive approach is vital for businesses to address nature-related risks and ensure long-term value creation. 🚀 New Policy Brief Alert! 🌍 Our latest UNU-IAS Policy Brief, co-authored with Akio Takemoto and Mei Maruyama, dives deep into "Decarbonizing Food Systems through International Food Trade and Post-production Management." 🥦🌽 Why It Matters: Food systems are responsible for 23-42% of global greenhouse gas emissions. With nine out of the top ten economies with the highest food-related GHG emissions being G20 countries, it's crucial to shift focus from just agricultural production to include post-production stages like processing, transport, packaging, and consumption. What You’ll Discover: ✅ Challenges & Opportunities: Key issues and practical solutions for both developed and developing nations. ✅ Policy Recommendations: Strategies to raise awareness, promote evidence-based measures, and foster international collaboration. ✅ Future Directions: How to integrate and coordinate policies for effective climate action. 🔗 Download the full brief here: https://lnkd.in/gfaiqCcV Let’s drive the change for a greener, more sustainable global food system! 🌱✨ #ClimateChange #Sustainability #FoodSystems #PolicyBrief UN University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability #GlobalTrade #EnvironmentalImpact

African agri-processors are uniquely positioned to lead in the transition to sustainable value chains. 🌾 Proximity to farmers, vast areas of arable land, diverse climates and rich biodiversity provide a solid foundation. 🌍 Proximity to key markets like the EU as well as a young workforce, make for strong fundamentals. 📈 How to seize the opportunity? The backbone is advanced traceability. Without it, you cannot credibly communicate about your greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity impact or living wages in the value chain. 🌱 In our latest article we've put together a comprehensive guide on building an impact strategy for African agribusiness. From the key elements of an impact strategy to turning impact into competitive advantage. 👉🏼 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/evpXNEWN #Agribusiness #Africa #ImpactInvesting

Sustainable Development Report 2024 📜 Some of the key highlights: 📈 On average, only 16 per cent of the SDG targets are on track to be met globally by 2030. 📈 Nordic countries are in the top rows; Poor and vulnerable nations are far behind in the list while BRICS nations are showing progress. 📈 The second SDG "Zero Hunger" is still a distant dream. One thematic chapter of this report focuses solely on food security and sustainable agriculture.
