This is a good summary of the key focus points around EU energy transition policy from Miguel Gil Tertre of the European Commission. While the EU has absorbed reasonably well the shock in energy prices since the invasion of Ukraine, the need to move to comprehensive energy security through much greater electrification and and domestic energy generation is urgent. Huge improvements in the capacity and efficiency of the European grid and inter connectors are needed to handle the variability of supply and moving generation long distances away from demand. Delivering this transition will require lifting investment in the backbone of the EU energy system by at least 1.5% of GDP for well over a decade. The summit of EU leaders in late April of this year has hopefully provided renewed impetus to the urgency of energy transition, and the wide range of policies - public funding, optimising of access to private sector capital, improving co-ordination between EU countries, etc - to accelerate delivery. Well worth a read.

Researchers, government officials, and business leaders convened in Cambridge, Massachusetts this fall for the annual MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) research conference. Participants agreed that progress on the energy transition depends on collective action benefiting all stakeholders. “In this room we have a lot of power if we work together, convey to all of society what we see as real pathways and policies to solve problems, and take collective action,” said William H. Delighted to have participated in this publication with my coauthors Emanuele Giovannetti, Golnoush Soroush, Tooraj Jamasb and Manuel Llorca. In our chapter “Digitalisation and Economic Regulation in the Energy Sector” we conclude that digitalisation in the energy sector requires making some improvements and adjustments in several components of its regulatory framework. These include: the remuneration framework for grid operators, the standardisation and interoperability of all the involved devices and data formats, and the provisions to incentivise and promote innovative solutions. Setting interoperability requirements becomes increasingly relevant with the connection of more digital devices in the power system and is essential to ensure fair competition in the provision and adoption of digital solutions.

We were honored to host and support the recent Atmospheric Chemistry and Dispersion Modelling of Secondary Emissions from Carbon Capture Workshop, sponsored by the National Energy Technology Laboratory and Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management | U.S. Department of Energy. This event brought together leading experts to discuss critical advancements in non-CO2 emissions activities across federal agencies. The workshop featured insightful presentations from key figures such as Dan Hancu from FECM, Gokul Vishwanathan from the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy and Andrew J. R. Gillespie, Ph. D. from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Attendees also had the opportunity to explore case studies on emissions measurements and modeling from global projects, including the Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) and Sustainable Operation of Post-Combustion Capture Plants (SCOPE) Project in Norway and the International CCS Knowledge Centre in Canada. Other presenters represented EPRI, several universities and government agencies. It was a pleasure to offer an optional tour, enhancing the hands-on experience for participants. Kudos to all involved for fostering collaboration and driving innovation and sustainability in carbon capture technology. #CarbonManagement #Decarbonization 

Professor Bruno Carmo gave an interview to Pesquisa FAPESP magazine about research into reducing pollutant emissions from oil rig support vessels. The professor explains that, based on real data, mathematical-computational models of the power system of this type of vessel were developed. The models were then operated with the same parameters that real ships were operating with. They found that the results were the same and then used the models to optimize the use of the generators.
