How are we making climate change adaptation choices under uncertainty? 🤷♂️ Our latest study, by Zoe Latham, Grace Barrett-Lennard and myself, dives into decision dynamics in the Philippines to identify new governance archetypes and how they respond to and are influenced by uncertainty. We learned so much in this research, but two things stand out to me: 1️⃣ mobilising values can help communities overcome choice uncertainties (e.g. where should we invest in adaptation), and 2️⃣ groups that use deliberative decision-making processes end up balancing risk better, which results in fewer losses. This week I had the privilege of representing Colombia, participating in the OECD Regional Development Policy Committee, where I shared some of the public policy measures carried out by the National Planning Department that incorporate a systemic climate resilience approach, such as: ✅The 2021 CONPES 4058 “Public policy to reduce disaster risk conditions and adapt to Climate Variability Phenomena” and 2022 CONPES 4048 for the Mojana region. ✅The territorial climate resilience strategy with a community approach incorporated in the National Development Plan 2022-2026, including projects, financing and capacity building, the development of impact and result indicators on the reduction of vulnerability and adaptive capacity in the face of climate shocks. ✅Colombia's long-term Climate Strategy 2050 which evaluated the occurrence of disasters accentuated by climate change such as floods, hurricanes, landslides, drought and forest fires, and analyzed combinations of adaptation and risk reduction measures. I would like to thank my colleagues from the DNP’s Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate (DADS), who provided valuable inputs to share with the other 37 OECD countries Colombia's measures and advances for a better adaptation to climate change.

I have successfully completed the course on "Nature-based Solutions for Disaster and Climate Resilience" developed by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and The Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR). This course deepened my understanding of how nature can play a pivotal role in building resilience against the challenges posed by climate change and disasters.  Throughout the program, I explored innovative approaches and sustainable strategies that leverage the power of nature. Great to share that I have successfully completed a virtual course on "Nature-based Solutions for Disaster and Climate Resilience." This program was organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Partnership for The Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), with support from the European Union, in collaboration with the SDG Academy on the edX platform. The course provided great knowledge into how nature-based solutions can strengthen resilience against climate risks and disasters and deepened my understanding of sustainable strategies that prioritize environmental integrity while protecting vulnerable communities and ecosystems. #ClimateResilience #NatureBasedSolutions #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction

The Tribal Coastal Resilience Portfolio of the Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative, in collaboration with the UW Climate Impacts Group, the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, and Washington Sea Grant, have released a report on “Climate Adaptation Barriers and Needs Experienced by Northwest Coastal Tribes.” Despite taking the lead in climate adaptation, NW coastal Tribes face significant limitations, including financial support, staff and workforce capacity, partnerships, technical assistance, and communication, education and outreach. The authors hope the report will build awareness of such challenges among funders, policymakers, and technical support providers, among others. #climateadaptation https://ow.ly/hH2M50TmvH2

🌍 Climate Adaptation and River Basin Management: New EU Guidance 🌊 The Water Directors of the Member States and the European Commission adopted a guidance document to align river basin management planning with climate adaptation. The updated guidance on "#RiverBasinManagement in a #ChangingClimate" provides crucial tools to help water managers align their strategies with the #WaterFrameworkDirective (#WFD) and #FloodsDirective (#FD). It emphasizes the role of #integratedwatermanagement to address climate impacts such as #floods, #droughts, and pollution, and to build resilience. The document also outlines guiding principles for #sustainablewateruse and adaptation, ensuring ecosystem health and mitigating climate risks. The 57 thematic steps outlined in the EU guidance emphasize climate adaptation in water management. Key steps include screening the Programme of Measures (PoM) for climate robustness, ensuring adaptation and mitigation alignment, and conducting a detailed proofing of individual projects. This involves early assessments of GHG emissions, climate vulnerabilities, and resilience measures to ensure projects are not only effective under current conditions but also adaptable to future climate challenges.
