BA Show Their Value By… 🔍 Focusing on defining the problem, user groups, and scenarios, over the solution and tech details. 🤝 Collaborating for a shared understanding, over coordinating team and stakeholder tasks. 🧩 Providing context to help the team and stakeholders "connect the dots", over controlling what exactly is documented or in a spec. 💬 Facilitating conversations with incorrect and incomplete information to get others to engage and add to the conversation, over creating perfect documentation. It’s not about being correct; it is about getting the group to engage and share a common understanding of the problem and solution space. 📝 Thinking about their role as structuring relevant information for others to use and collaborate on, over a role focused on documents, reviews, approvals, and hand-offs. 👉 How do you show your value as a BA? I agree this is a spot-on breakdown of a BA’s true value! In my experience, 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙩 has always paved the way for more impactful solutions. I also find that facilitating open conversations with stakeholders, even with incomplete information, builds trust and encourages collaborative problem-solving. Recently, I’ve been working on a project where connecting the dots for the team has been crucial. By providing context rather than rigid specs, the team has been more engaged, aligned, and proactive in finding solutions. The role of a BA goes far beyond documentation. It’s about 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 and enable a shared understanding. I love to see others in the field emphasizing these key aspects!
I couldn't agree more with the way you've articulated the value BAs bring to the table! BAs rock by making connections and sparking discussions. It’s all about collaboration and creating that “magic moment” of shared understanding, not just pushing paperwork. The best part? Seeing those lightbulb moments when the team gets it, and everything clicks into place. That’s when you really feel the impact of our work, enabling outcomes that stick and make a difference.
BAs must also normalise asking questions and help stakeholders at all levels to see the big picture, ensure that THE STORY (user story , requirement, opportunity , business driver, etc) aligns with the overall initiative strategy.
