Join me at IMPA - The International Marine Purchasing Association London 2024 event when I take the stage as Chair of the Key Panel Discussion: Adopting a New Standard for Environmental Footprint Calculation Join me for a debate on the newly launched IMPA Maritime Environmental Footprint (IMEF) Initiative. This initiative is pioneering a new standard for calculating and managing the corporate environmental footprint within the maritime industry. The panel of experts will discuss how this project, through an activity-based approach, sets a solid foundation for Scope 3 emissions calculations and integrates carbon footprint data into essential decision-making processes. The IMEF Initiative aspires to unite maritime purchasers and suppliers under a unified standard, driving sustainability forward. With endorsements from leading maritime companies, this initiative is quickly becoming a transformative movement that only companies in the sector can afford to overlook. Minister President Jan Jambon states: "It is remarkable to see how not only the [Blue Gate Antwerp] site itself but also the buildings and business activities of various commercial players are constantly pushing the boundaries of our ability in terms of entrepreneurship, of circular economy, of sustainability. The dedication to research and development, the integrated approach, and the concrete results of all these efforts, make Blue Gate Antwerp an inspiring example both nationally and internationally". We indeed aim to be an inspiration to others, and to communicate in a transparent way about our goals, achievements and lessons learned. In this context, we release our newly revised and fully updated #CSR report, as a follow-up to our previous report from 3 years ago. We are thankful to Bopro to guide us in defining and deploying our E²SG strategy. Together with all stakeholders we can further develop the BGA site, considering the internal and external visions and needs in terms of Environmental, Economical, Social aspects and Governance (E²SG). We are proud to have presented the report yesterday at the Kick Off event of UNITAR | CIFAL Flanders in Antwerp. Feel free to take a look into the report here: https://lnkd.in/e94BSE4W Fun fact: you will see that the title of our CSR report is "Be Good And Dare". This is a subtle reference to the letterword of the public-private partnership association BGAD (Blue Gate Antwerp Development). Under topic 1.4.2. in the report you can find the 4 core values to which the Be Good And Dare phrase refers. If you have any questions regarding this document or the development of our site, feel free to contact Dimitri Torfs. “What has been your greatest achievement over the last couple of years?” someone asked me at the end of a presentation I gave to a group of investors a few months ago. Half-jokingly, I replied, “All the things we resisted doing and stopped doing.” As Paul Martin aptly put it in one of his posts on the notion of “trying everything” in the fight against climate change: “We need to triage our limited resources, money, and political goodwill and emotional bandwidth, applying them only to things that have passed a series of stage-gates of techno-economic evaluation.” On a more heartfelt note, what I am most proud of is ZEPA - The Zero Emission Port Alliance, an effort to bring together stakeholders across our industry’s value chain to make battery-electric container handling equipment the standard this decade, through de-bottlenecking, optimizing, and accelerating adoption thereby eliminating the “green premium”. Last week, we held ZEPA’s 3rd steering committee meeting with delegates from members including CATL, SANY, Rocsys, Kempower, SSA Marine, Port of Rotterdam and Patrick Terminals. A lot of great work has been done in a short period of time and we will be soon releasing ZEPA's first industry report. When I took this job three years ago, I didn’t realize it would take a coalition of this sort to achieve our goals. But one thing I have learned is that regardless of the sector, be it hard or "easy to abate", the required change is truly systemic. For us, technology is not even the toughest part. Vested interests and inertia against change are entrenched in existing processes, operating models, responsibilities, etc. all of which contribute to the green premium. Sometimes, it takes the combined power of a broad coaltion to overcome these obstacles. I was tagged in a post on the Stellenbosch Business School's platform, and was invited to be part of this event. Once a business starts operating way passed its break-even point, it's very opportunistically important for that business to avail itself to events like this from time-to-time to engage with other individuals and organizations on topics and discussions revolving around the investment climate as well as socio-economic development initiatives affecting daily business operations [this will allow the business to grow its network; and learn about innovative solutions it could use to adapt/pivot its business operations to ensure a stable flow of funds]. The Kent Rock Recycling Shed is constantly tapping into the knowledge repository to stay up-to-date with the most relevant innovative solutions addressing climate change policies, economic growth projections and sustainable development initiatives. The Kent Rock Recycling Shed is engaged in the business of collecting, storing, and supplying the market with barcoded items from waste material --- in response to Eswatini Environment Authority's Waste Management Innovation Challenge; Stellenbosch University's Zero-Waste-to-Landfill Strategy; and the Royal Science and Technology Park's Sustainable Development Goals Innovative Enterprise Challenge.
