The tourism sector anticipates the best summer in history for Málaga. Only a week has passed since the start of the summer season, but the tourism sector in the province of Málaga already has numbers that confirm we are heading for a record-breaking summer. Hotel reservations for July, for example, are already two percentage points higher than the close of this month in 2023. The data presented shows an 8.1% increase in the number of travelers staying in regulated establishments during the first four months of 2024, reaching 2,229,706 travelers. This increase is mainly attributed to the growth of foreign tourism, which has risen by 16%, while national tourism has decreased by 3.6%. Overnight stays also grew by 12%, reaching 8 million, with a notable 18.4% rise in overnight stays by foreign tourists. #tourism #recordsummer

James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, presented an encouraging report on the nation's tourism performance and updates for 2024. James highlighted that Antigua and Barbuda closed 2023 with a 6% increase in air arrivals compared to 2022. Arrivals reached 281,896, up from 265,119 the previous year, approaching the record of just over 300,000 visitors set in 2019. The first quarter of 2024 has started strong, recording an 11% growth compared to the same period in 2023. This growth even surpasses the figures from 2019, the benchmark year, with an impressive 7% increase. The Paradox of Popularity: As destinations such as Lisbon, Porto, and Sintra gain popularity and find a spot on everyone's travel wishlist, they unwittingly become victims of their allure. The influx of visitors, while boosting local economies, often overwhelms the delicate balance of these once-pristine locales, changing them forever. In Lisbon's Baixa, once the commercial heart of the city, too many tourists have driven out locals and locally-owned shops and eateries. The impact is evident with 121 closed stores. Vacant buildings are transformed into hotels, and commerce is limited to mediocre restaurants and souvenir stands. The Expresso newspaper looked at how tourism has forever changed Baixa Pombalina, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. They found that centuries-old shops had long gone, and empty storefronts far outnumbered the filled ones. The Baixa is a shadow of its former self. Overtourism also accelerates the erosion of local cultures. Traditional commerce finds itself inundated with tourists, leading to the commodification of their heritage and a loss of authenticity as businesses cater to mass-market demands, diluting the genuine essence of the locale. Overtourism also takes a toll on the environment too, with fragile ecosystems like the Benagil Caves bearing the brunt of increased traffic. Pollution, habitat destruction, and disruption to local wildlife contribute to irreversible damage, eroding the scenic beauty that made these cave destinations famous. https://lnkd.in/dQmhvN3s

Portugal is set for a historic year, in terms of tourism revenue, the World Travel & Tourism Council(WTTC) has predicted. The WTTC expects inbound tourism to contribute more than €54bn to Portugal’s economy this year. This would represent 20% of the country’s total economy and be up by over 24% on pre-Covid 2019 levels. The WEF's TTDI has been a benchmark, but it overlooks the significance of individual criteria. By employing a hybrid multi-criteria analysis with MARCOS and MEREC methods, we discovered a new ranking order. Spain shines at the top, reflecting its outstanding travel and tourism conditions.
