Yesterday, Council of the European Union and the European Parliament have struck a significant deal on the Net-Zero Industry Act (#NZIA), marking a pivotal step towards enhancing Europe's green technology manufacturing ecosystem. 🌱 The NZIA aims to propel the industrial deployment of net-zero technologies, crucial for achieving the EU's ambitious climate objectives. By leveraging the strength of the single market, Europe reaffirms its commitment to leadership in industrial green technologies. 💡 Key highlights of the agreement include: ✅ Establishment of a single list of net-zero technologies with criteria for selecting strategic projects. ✅ Simplification of permit-granting procedures to facilitate investments in green technologies. ✅ Creation of net-zero industry academies to enhance the skills of the European workforce. ✅ Introduction of regulatory sandboxes to foster innovation in green technology development. Moreover, the agreement sets clear benchmarks to measure progress towards climate neutrality, including targets for strategic technology products like #solarpanels , #windturbines , #batteries , #hydrogen, #ccs and #biogas. 🎯 Act is targeting by 2050, hydrogen could represent 20% of Europe's energy mix. 🎯CCS is expected to grow, by 2030 annual injection capacity of at least 50 million tonnes of CO2 in storage. With over 15,000 participants from around the globe, including policymakers, researchers, and businesses, this event was a testament to the growing momentum in the hydrogen sector. The #Netherlands and the #UK, both leading the way with ambitious hydrogen strategies and production goals for 2030 and beyond, held the second UK-NL Round Table on Hydrogen. The Brazilian G20 Presidency and Italian G7 Presidency convened last week for a G20 Special Session on Sustainable Fuels, Chemicals and Materials. I had the pleasure of discussing gaseous fuels at a roundtable hosted by the Government of Brazil. It’s clear that the world is off track to meet global climate targets and that we need to accelerate the development and scaling of solutions to enable net zero. Renewable fuels, low-carbon fuels and e-fuels are vital to decarbonizing sectors that cannot easily be electrified, such as aviation and shipping. Solutions to produce alternative fuels are available today, yet we aren’t seeing sufficient progress to implement them and lower emissions. I see several things that can help drive this much needed transition. Among them are clear, long-term and easy to navigate incentive schemes as well as mandates to encourage stronger buyer commitment, carbon pricing mechanisms that can help create a level playing field for fossil fuels and low-emission alternatives, and an alignment of standards across different markets. Robust lifecycle assessment (LCA) methodologies would foster comparability across various fuels and trust in their decarbonization values. At CEM15, the Clean Energy Ministerial launched the CEM Action Plan to Accelerate Future Fuels by promoting increased demand for, and use of, Future Fuels. At Topsoe, we’re ready with the solutions for low-emission fuels and we look forward to helping governments on implementing the plan along with our partners from the Biofuture Campaign and the Hydrogen Council. This first #dialogue in a series of five, focused on scaling and accelerating #greenhydrogen adoption, brought together diverse #stakeholders from #industry, #government, #community, and #academia to exchange #insights, share best #practices, and forge #collaborative #pathways forward. At the heart of the #conversation was a shared recognition of the transformative potential of green #hydrogen as a clean, versatile, and scalable #energycarrier. With both the European Union and #Australia both placing significant emphasis on the role of #greenhydrogen in the #energytransition, the dialogue provided a unique #opportunity to share #knowledge, exchange #bestpractice and harmonise efforts for collective action. Looking ahead, this first Dialogue sets the stage for a series of forthcoming dialogues focused on key thematic areas, including #greenfinancing, #sociallicense and #community #acceptance, #coordination across the green hydrogen #supplychain, and #hydrogen as a #feedstock for a secondary #process to produce other #powerfuels, #chemicals and green #commodities (#P2X).
