"Never judge a book by its cover" I used to think I had a strong radar for first impressions, but I’ve discovered that people learn and work in different ways. Sometimes, it takes time for someone to reveal their true potential. While I’m only human and absolutely make first impressions (that are sometimes 100% correct!!!), I’ve learned to just take note of them, let those impressions evolve, and I love when I am surprised by what people show me over time. In superyacht training and recruitment, it’s vital to step back and give people space to shine and grow. There is a place for everyone. Each person adapts at their own pace, with their own set of unique strengths & weaknesses. At the New Zealand Superyacht Academy, we see our students’ individuality and find where they’ll thrive on board. Our mission is to uphold New Zealand’s reputation by preparing our crew and celebrating their successes as they build their careers. We foster a supportive community that strengthens New Zealand’s standing as a source of skilled superyacht professionals. Finding the right fit is more than a quick assessment – it’s about patience and letting people reveal their full potential.

At Crew Connect on Tuesday, Joost van Ree engaged a panel of five highly experienced cruise professionals from Royal Caribbean Group, OCEANIC CATERING CO. LTD, BSM Cruise Services, Holland America Line and Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) to explore how recruitment and training are evolving in the cruise industry. What we learned: 🔸 Attracting Young Talent: As competition for new talent grows, cruise companies are focusing on innovative ways to attract younger recruits. 🔸 Leadership and Retention: Adapting leadership approaches and providing clear, realistic pre-deployment information were highlighted as essential for improving retention—a critical KPI in the industry. Captain Sanjay Kushwaha of BSM noted that India’s government aims to expand its cruise sector and increase crew supply by 20% with new training institutes. Karen Avelino of PTC emphasised the need for structured career paths and mentorship to compete with land-based roles, pointing out that realistic information during the lengthy recruitment process can help prevent candidate dropout. Royal Caribbean's Cherece Vina shared how partnerships with local training providers in places like Thailand, Vietnam, and South Africa are helping bridge the gap between maritime curricula and the unique needs of cruise operations. Erik Visser from Holland America Line discussed the importance of updating training to reflect modern technology, while Michael Weisner of Oceanic Catering highlighted the value of upskilling local instructors, especially for mid-management culinary roles. Join Joost at the OTG stand at 13:00 on Wednesday for a demo of OLP for Cruise, showcasing how it supports faster upskilling and mobilisation of technical, deck, and hospitality teams. #CruiseConnectGlobal #CruiseCareers #MaritimeRecruitment #SeafarerTraining #FutureOfCruise

Building teams and communication pathways is key to helping an organization grow and develop a strong culture of unity and togetherness.
I am putting in the final preparations for my third team building activities session at the Tivoli Drive-In this morning. I have worked with the Event management, hospitality and Conservation teams from the most recent prior intakes and as we farewell and congratulate the graduating teams, we welcome another set. Today is also a double header session with a double team (events and administration) in the morning and hospitality for the afternoon training. I really enjoy these sessions and watching the teams grow and develop over their 6 months of VET (Vocational Education and Training) together. This week we also celebrate 🥳 the graduation of the conservation team with their brand new certifications. #VET #communication #teamwork #growth #teambuilding #FitAllIn

THE IMPORTANCR OF SOFT SKILLS TRAINING FOR SUPERYACHT CREW Today we take the opportunity to highlight the importance of soft skill training, a subject that is at the heart of the GUEST Programs ethos and something we have been promoting and actively finding solutions for since 2008. The core skills that not only support professional development and careers, but also the essential skills that are directly linked to providing the answers to the industries need to retain & value crew, as well as ensure the industries professional & sustainable future. These skills are all applicable & necessary in all yacht professions to maintaining happy working environments, with motivated people and effective teams, and with more organized and professional outcomes right across our workplaces. However, having explored results from crew retention surveys, all which show up with very similar statistics, and use similar language ...we are seeing some pretty negative situations. From entry level crew to Heads of Departments and everything in-between... there seems to be an undercurrent of dissatisfaction when it comes to the frontline people of our sector. With the main reasons for crew leaving a vessel, and sometimes also leave yachting completely, we can see. 59% Crew tension/politics 40% Lack of Support 35% Low morale amongst crew Which are all likely caused by - 42% Poor leadership Leading to 62% Burnout and fatigue (Figures courtesy of Tim Clarke Quay Crew) Our sector demands and expects high performance from individuals. Performance which is based on technical and core skills, both of which are needed for any role and are of equal importance. We cannot EXPECT anything, unless there is a collective willingness to understand the value that soft skills bring to both professional and personal growth of individuals, and ACCEPT that we as a sector needs to demand industry standards of core skill development for all crew - at all levels.
