Manufacturing Automation – Wrong Solution Automation is not a substitute for good PROBLEM DEFINITION! -- Defining the problem in technology AGNOSTIC and GENERIC terms is the first step to RIGHT sized and successful AUTOMATION! -- "To Summarize: While the failure modes listed above, as well as others, are reciprocals in some cases from both the manufacturer and the automation supplier perspectives .... and perhaps one can argue as to who's primary responsibility a particular consideration is: These failure modes are "visible" to both parties and working in partnership, each can "check the other" to avoid a White Elephant! Automation plays a pivotal and high impact role in manufacturing but in and of itself, automation IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE for the other keys requirements which must first be in place for automation to succeed. These elements include a manufacturing process which is well understood and is in control, a clear definition of the objectives of the automation, (Scope of Work of User Requirements Specification), a thorough evaluation of automation form factor alternatives that align with the larger manufacturing strategy, a properly trained/skilled manufacturing workforce that will operate the automation and most important, Right Sizing mutual expectations within the technical-financial limits to assure success. For the manufacturer, a White Elephant is not only an immediate failure in terms of time, money and resources used to design and build it but can also have larger consequences if that automation is key to a new product introduction or part of a larger automation strategy for the manufacturing process. Most important, a White Elephant can lead to lasting and long term aversion to automation! Like modern day Snake Oil, SMEs in particular, are susceptible to the Manufacturing Process "cure-all"! Right sized Automation offers no additional Benefits! --- "Unique problems require unique solutions! The General Purpose Robot Vision Goes Something Like This. Design and build a multi degree of freedom, standard motion system which can be used for a variety of applications, manufacturing, and other.  Once developed, the end users and value add integrators will develop custom applications with ancillary tooling, end effectors and customized user interfaces, using minimum-code or no-code interfaces with the generally flexible, control Teach Pendant. Various sizes of the robot will be evolved and offered, differentiated primarily on robot reach and payload and with good marketing and outreach to end users/integrators, an “eco-system” of applications, accessories and domain specific knowledge will be created and used to provide feedback for product improvements and further developments.
