Bureau of International Labor Affairs’ Post

The Democratic Republic of Congo supplies most of the world's #cobalt – a critical mineral for electric vehicles and renewable energy. Yet recent monitoring has identified over 6,200 children engaged in mining activities in the Haut-Katanga and Lualaba provinces alone. Through our Global Accelerator Project (GALAB) with the International Labour Organization, we are intensifying our commitment to eliminating child labor from cobalt supply chains and creating sustainable solutions for affected communities. GALAB works globally to foster innovative solutions for eliminating child labor and forced labor with a targeted focus across eight countries: Brazil, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Malaysia, Mauritania, Nigeria and Somalia. Building on previous ILAB efforts in the DRC, this effort will: • Work with companies to build responsible business practices in the mining sector. • Strengthen remediation services for children identified through our monitoring systems. • Support families with education and income-generating opportunities. • Enhance labor and mining inspection capabilities.
