Every 4 years, most of us tune in to watch the Olympics But what would it be like working there? Well, working at the Olympics has some great perks 1. Global Exposure ↳ It offers unparalleled exposure and networking opportunities. 2. Professional Development ↳ The experience gained can significantly boost your career prospects. 3. Cultural Exchange ↳ You get to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. 4. Contribution to a Historic Event ↳ You would contribute to an event that promotes peace, unity, and sportsmanship. Doesn't sound too shabby right?

Unpopular opinion: The real value of sports travel lies not in the competition, but in the cultural and personal experience it offers. Why? In a world where performance and results often take centre stage, I argue that sports travel, especially in youth football, Should focus more on the personal and cultural enrichment of players than on competition alone. Competition is essential, Of course, But the opportunity to explore new cultures, learn languages and build international friendships Offers far more profound and lasting value than any trophy. Conclusion: In the end, It is the ability of these trips to open minds, Foster cross-cultural understanding and develop more well-rounded, empathetic individuals that should really be celebrated.

🏅 How being an athlete may help you at work 🏅 Like most folks, I'm obsessed with watching the Olympics this summer. It's so satisfying seeing people who are best at their craft experiencing what might be the highlight of their careers. I was a competitive fencer in high school. I was nowhere near as good as the folks competing in Paris but I was the captain of my high school team and traveled for lots of national competitions. When talking to college hires and early in career folks who don't have a lot of work experience, I like to compare some of the learnings I got from being an athlete on a team to what I've learned at work. ⏱ Putting in the time & work - When you first start training or when you first start in your career, there's nothing more important than just putting in the time and getting experience under your belt. Sometimes that means doing the same thing over and over until it's muscle memory. Sometimes that means competing against a lot of different people to get experience with lots of different situations. Same goes for career - nothing can take the place of time, practice, and experiences. 👯♀️ It's all about the team - Fencing is a funny sport because you compete as an individual but there are team competitions where the total score of the team matters. You have to carry your weight as an individual, but you need to rely on the other folks on your team to win. You learn from, practice with, and compete against your teammates. Same goes at work - you get better because of the folks on your team, you learn from them, rely on them, and yes, there's still that aspect of competition when it comes to promotions, rewards, etc. 🌍 Communities are small - The fencing community in New York City was small. Every competition had the same folks, every training camp I went to had the same group of coaches, and even in national competitions, I'd compete with the same people often. This community ended up helping me get better through competition, practice, and in many cases, became my good friends. Same goes for work - the community I've built has been an awesome resource for mentors, friends, new jobs, advice, learning, etc.

One of these things is not like the other… ⛳ Here’s a throwback to a memory that feels like a lifetime ago. Representing Ireland over in Italy, alongside two incredible teammates. One went on to with the British Amateur and has played in The Masters (jealous 😆) The other secured a coveted golf scholarship in the US and has also turned professional. James and Rowan are two class acts, on and off the course. And me? I took a slightly different path. I ventured into the world of crafting emails and retention strategies for #eCom brands. Fun, but probably not as fun as playing golf for a living. But, playing golf at an elite level taught me invaluable lessons about discipline and perseverance. The countless hours of practice. The focus is on every shot. The resilience to keep going, even when the game didn't go my way. These lessons have been invaluable in both my work and personal life. Learnings I’ve been able to lean upon when things didn’t go my way. Here's to embracing where we come from, the paths we've trodden, and the adventures that lie ahead. I’m terrible at Padel… But that’s beside the point. 🎾 Despite my lack of hand-eye coordination, I hit the ball when it came to using this event to showcase how important internal events are—not just for boosting morale but also for enhancing brand presence (well beyond the event itself). I still don’t understand the rules of Padel or why my opponents shout "love" at me despite my failure to return the ball. 😳 But I do understand the power of community that these events foster and how crucial they are for building a positive culture beyond the office. Last Friday, we strengthened our culture, connections, and (for some of us) coordination. 👊 Naturally, I had to tie this back to marketing. 😉 🔌 Events like these don’t just show that the company cares about employee well-being—they’re also a great tool for employee advocacy. When employees share their experiences, it generates authentic content that amplifies the company’s brand presence far beyond the event. This kind of organic advocacy is invaluable for building trust and credibility. Racket sports like padel are not only great for fitness but also for mental sharpness. The game’s fast pace requires quick decisions, enhanced hand-eye coordination, and strategic thinking—all of which can lead to better business decisions. 🤔 It’s no wonder Padel is gaining popularity in the business world as a way to build relationships and sharpen the mind. 💡 I’d also like to touch on how Padel is facilitating business relationships. I’ve definitely got a better shot at this than on the golf course, where the only thing I can drive is the buggy. ⛳️ A massive thank you to ISD Padel for hosting our White & Co Real Estate LLC and White & Clayton Recruitment crowd! Two years at Sport England! Thought I'd do a reflective exercise I've used a lot recently called the Four L's but it turns out I've Loved, Loathed, Learnt from and Long for the same thing - The challenge. Before joining, I longed for the challenge of delivering truly transformative pieces of work. I can honestly say I've loved doing this. The caveat being is that love is the overall feeling whilst the process brings up a range of emotions. I've heard the likes of transformation and collaboration being referred to as a contact sport and I couldn't agree more. But playing a contact sport for 36 hours a week can be physically and mentally hard for someone who doesn’t believe in the 'pick your battles' approach. I've loathed how long it can take to be able to see progress. This isn't like delivering sports programmes - the big wins aren't as regular and the small wins come in the form of business case approvals or successes your funded partners have achieved. This really challenges your motivation to keep fighting the fight. Finally, I've learnt that great listening skills are more important than speaking skills. For those that know me will know this can be a challenge sometimes, but something I am conscious of and am striving to improve. Whilst also being clear and concise when I do speak. I cannot believe it has been two years already and I am looking forward to the next two.

I had the pleasure of recently speaking at the Euroleague Basketball MBA programme in Berlin. Thanks again to Miguel Ferreira and Vincenzo Di Giuseppe for the kind invitation. Here were my three career takeaways from the chat. 1. On Patience and Obsession: "You need to be a bit obsessive. Everyone can tell you to follow your passion and find your dream quickly, but the truth is, it’s very difficult. You'll need patience, and it will take time. This doesn't sell books or dreams in the short term, but it’s the old-fashioned story that holds true." 2. On Consistency: "Consistency beats intensity. It’s not about being intensely focused for a short burst; it’s about making small, manageable changes and doing them consistently over a long period. The real competitive advantage is the ability to do something for 10 minutes a day for one year—something almost no one can sustain." 3. On Building Relationships: "When you’re trying to build a relationship with someone, get them to talk about themselves. People love speaking about themselves. Ask open-ended questions and listen. The power of listening is massively undersold. Start with one relationship, one interaction, and then scale it to many. This fundamentally changes your approach to how you deal with people on a day-to-day basis." https://lnkd.in/eQYwV2xf
