🎄 Who Will Reign as the Grocery Champion This Holiday Season? 🎄 Happy December! The holidays are officially upon us—a time for gathering, eating, and celebrating with loved ones. With food at the heart of these festivities, my marketing mind can't help but wonder: which grocery store will come out on top this year? Over the past few years, we've seen grocery chains expand their offerings and invest in their digital experiences. Is this the key to standing apart from the competition during the holiday season? Loblaws Inc continues to be a leader this time of year with specialty holiday items, holiday content like the PC Insiders reports and obviously PC Express for your last minute Turkey pick ups. Sobeys has been exceptional in this regard, with focus on Voila and their partnership with SCENE+ as a their loyalty program. Now don’t take this as Farm Boy (Canada) slander, because I do love FB, but they definitely could take some notes from their competitors to improve their digital presence… perhaps a loyalty program could be in their future? 👀 Ultimately as a consumer, what matters most to me is in-store experience, safety with my information that store has, and of course, access to the ingredients to my family’s favourite recipes. For the Bird family that's “Brewis”, a type of Newfie bread that we fry up with bacon and eggs on Christmas morning. So, which grocery store will you be headed to this holiday season? Also, tell me one of your family’s favourite holiday recipes in the comments ❤️ #Grocery #eCommerce #CustomerExperience #HolidaySeason #MarketingInsights #Okta

We wanted to have a look at the Festive Fayre and the most popular so far this year! 🎄🎄🎄 However, it’s not always easy to determine what should be in this category. Obviously Wrapping Paper, Christmas Cards, Decorations, Reindeer antlers and Elf ears and Christmas themed sandwiches – which are festive, but with so many varieties in the various c13000 store read, they don’t show as big sellers. We group barcodes into product types, so we had a look at some seasonal product types that performed well in the week before Christmas last year and compare vs sales in those product types since November 1st this year. We looked at the top 5 based on barcodes with the most units sold across the all the stores. As well as these seasonal product types, there are the things that make you think of Christmas, but aren’t necessary festive as such. Is it just me but one of the first things that came to mind was Pickles & Lemonade? Not together, of course, or possibly! 🤷♂️ Some of the traditional snacks that you would expect to do well at Christmas are still way down the list at the moment (I checked out Cheese Footballs and Twiglets) – so we may have to run the lists again after Christmas to see what changed. Anything that says ‘Christmas’ to you that’s not immediately obvious? – If so we’ll look to put some additional Top 5’s out there. It is Christmas after all! And if your brands are not doing as well as you would like (they never are) we can not only track sales but work with you on activation campaigns (digital consumer coupons, retailer rewards and media screen advertising) in store to increase sales and distribution. 🎅🎅🎅 HARIBO UK Nestlé Lindt & Sprüngli Ferrero Rocher Mars Wrigley AG Barr Group Baxters Food Group Britvic plc Diageo BETTY AND MILLER LIMITED World of Sweets Au Vodka #data #insights #conveniencestores

You’re probably wondering why there’s a picture of Buddy the Elf back at school in this post? Well, with Pumpkin Spice Latte’s expected to hit Starbucks in about a week, it’s never too early to start planning for the 2024 Holiday Season! Speaking with many restaurant operators and retailers throughout this year, and reading numerous articles about current, and projected trends this season, I’ve compiled a list of key areas that are common to both industries- take and run with the ideas to help your stores for a great end to your year. In this 3 part series over the next few weeks, we’ll take a look at an overview of key events this season & their impact, and then we’ll explore specific ideas & planning for both the restaurant & retail industries. And then you’ll all be set to relax and enjoy the final Summer weekend at the beach over Labor Day weekend. According to Forbes, here’s what’s in store for us in the coming months, and the challenges & opportunities created. -The Presidential Election Due to increased economic anxiety, historically causes a dip in consumer spending -Shortened Holiday Shopping/Dining Season Only 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, shortest since 2019 -Competition According to CNBC, Walmart & Amazon are taking approximately 38% of every retail sales dollar so far this year However, Restaurant Dive reports that 65% of consumers prefer local restaurants over chains -Key Takeaways: To minimize the impact of all of these events, restaurants & retailers should launch their Holiday campaigns earlier than usual, keeping a solid presence with consistent messaging, to capture consumer interest -Early promotions can appeal to the habits of different generations, specifically Gen Z, who are known to shop & spend later in the season -Offer consistency and reliability to consumers feelings of uncertainty, especially in the period leading up to the election What are your thoughts on any other challenges you’re facing and how you’re preparing for the 2024 Holiday Season? Look forward to hearing from you all and sharing ideas! Next week, we’ll explore the restaurant industry specifically, and how other brands are preparing. Until then, a quote from Buddy, of course: "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!" — Buddy the Elf #holidayshopping #holidaymeal #holidayseason #instantfinancial

As Christmas 2024 approaches, one thing is clear — families are becoming savvier than ever when it comes to managing leftovers and reducing food waste. From creative leftover recipes to smart shopping habits, here's how UK households are keeping festive waste to a minimum. Creative Uses for Leftovers When the big day is over, the culinary creativity begins! Here’s how families are turning festive leftovers into delicious new meals • Pigs in Blanket Toad in the Hole – An indulgent twist on a classic dish. Sausage Rolls from Leftover Sausage Meat – Easy, tasty, and perfect for snacking. • Soups, Stews & Curries – No leftover veg goes to waste • Cheese Sauce Over Veg – A creamy, comforting way to use up surplus cheese and veg. • Doggy Bags for Guests – Send family and friends home with leftovers to avoid excess food waste. Smarter Spending, Less Waste Shoppers have become increasingly savvy when it comes to festive food shopping. Older generations, in particular, have mastered the art of planning: "We buy what we need, not what we don’t." With shops now open throughout the holiday period, many families are avoiding the classic over-buying panic. Instead, they are relying on thoughtful shopping lists and buying just enough to cover the Christmas period. Post-Christmas Bargains For those truly savvy shoppers, the Christmas spirit continues after December 25th. "I’m one of those people who hunts for reduced Christmas food." With supermarkets keen to clear out seasonal stock, families are picking up bargains on festive treats well into January, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Want to get closer to consumer behaviour and see what shoppers are doing this Christmas? At Good Sense Research, we have direct access to consumer insights and the latest food trends.
