In 2009, I had my first real experience of working on environmental and sustainable reporting practices followed by private companies. That sparked a love for really understanding reporting standards, best practices, and global benchmarks that can be taken inspiration from. I ended up enrolling in many climate action, sustainability reporting courses over the years, specifically those linked with small business contributions and got accredited. I started the Young Entrepreneurs Movement (YEM) which to date has graduated over 300 youth members to get them excited about social entrepreneurship and sustainability. Worked with startups on innovations in green solutions, looking at the end to end business process to reduce carbon footprint. One area that I always feel lacking is a greater, concerted effort on advocacy and deliberation. The more we become the sounding boards for living a green lifestyle the better. Hence I wanted to embark on this journey. The Climate Change Champions Fellowship Programme 2024. Doing this in collaboration with wonderful speakers and partners who share the vision. It just a comfortable gathering of young talented youth, professionals and aspirants across the globe who want to learn more, equip themselves and ponder on the challenges of our changing world. Details 4 weeks on virtual learning and experience with industry experts Platform for showcasing your climate action interventions Certification and a life long learning To apply simply register on the link. Open for all. https://lnkd.in/edPtJmm7 Deadline for registrations: 12 June 2024 #climatechangeisreal #climateaction #fellowship #internshipopportunity

Experiments in Sustainability – Worth Considering? This is my 9th week of taking time to reflect and post on sustainability matters. Needless to say, consistency is key! However, there is no such thing as perfect weeks. Last week, I struggled to organize my thoughts meaningfully, so I decided to post only once instead of twice… Just sharing – being human after all! But here I am, back in full swing this week, catching up! The other week, I shared some information on how to build green skills. As I mentioned before, I regularly engage with sustainability professionals from various countries and continents, and I am trying to understand how student experiments can work in an emerging market in general, and in South Africa in particular. In the meantime, I have learned more about the Burns model, which is fascinating (#CreditTo Jason Slipp PhD (Candidacy)(Additional resources: https://lnkd.in/dWRHRBbH). While reflecting on the model’s dimensions – content, perspectives, process, and context – I began asking myself how the process and context dimensions relate to students’ daily experiences in their communities, rather than just at a campus. How do we transform lives and change values and beliefs so that young people feel encouraged to take action? How do we enable students to focus on the process and appreciate the value of the experiences it brings with it? How do we provide context in a country where students come from such diverse backgrounds and communities? While digital tools might be helpful in this, issues of affordability and accessibility remain. Could a situation like this be used to introduce a relationship thread as part of the content dimension? How do we create deep, meaningful connections? Interestingly, my son recently participated in a science week at school and was involved in a poetry slam. It got me thinking: How do we present science in a way that resonates with hearts and minds? Could this be an experiment for sustainability in higher education as well? Here are some resources that explore this further: https://lnkd.in/dyKuPBCp; https://lnkd.in/dZQBxw_u; https://lnkd.in/dNXNF8GS). I would love to hear your thoughts! Here are some key insights from our conversation that highlight why this mission is so crucial: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗕𝗶𝗴: Small, actionable steps can lead to significant change over time. At Tomorrow University, we began with one sustainability degree. Today, it's a core element of more than 30 degree programs (MBA, Master, Bachelor), empowering students to address global challenges with innovative solutions. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆: Real change happens when communities are involved. By engaging our students in local sustainability projects, we've seen firsthand how community involvement can amplify impact and foster long-term success. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: Tracking the outcomes of sustainability initiatives is essential. We use internal metrics to continuously refine our approach, ensuring that our efforts lead to tangible, positive results. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Partnerships with organizations and industry experts have brought invaluable resources and insights to our programs. Collaboration is essential in scaling efforts and driving broader change. 𝗕𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: Real transformation takes time. The journey to making Tomorrow University a hub for sustainability education wasn't without its challenges, but perseverance has been key to our progress. At Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences we believe that by equipping the next generation with the right skills and mindset, we can create a more just and sustainable world. Curious to learn more? It was yet another impactful experience yesterday as we gladly attended the last #Teach4SDGs training workshop. Our guest speaker was Madam Ruth Olowosile (Executive Dir. of 'The Sustainable Green Environment Initiative', Cofounder and Executive Dir. of SGI) She spoke on the topic: How To Design Climate Change and SDGs Program Curriculum for Schools and other Students. Key Takeaways includes but not limited to: 1. Integrate Climate Change and SDGs into existing curriculum 2. Use interactive and experiential learning methods 3. Focus on student-centered and inquiry-based learning 4. Emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration and Connect learning to real-world scenarios and applications 5. Encourage student-led initiatives and community engagement 6. Provide opportunities for reflection, self-assessment, and feedback Factors to consider while Designing Activities: 1. Align those activities with learning objectives and outcomes 2. Incorporate diverse perspectives and voices e.g inviting guest speakers to speak to the students. 3. Use storytelling and scenario-based learning 4. Encourage creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship 5. Foster partnerships and collaborations with external organizations Note: she emphasize that educators have to be cautious of their approach to teaching; being mindful of what they say and do. Being mindful of the age of their students and tailoring their teaching techniques to fit that age, not exposing them to thing beyond their understanding and need at the moment. And lots more.. I am really grateful to be part of this movement. #AIIDEV #AIIDEVAFRICA #TEACH4SDGs
