Major win for South Africa’s hospitality sector! The recent settlement between the Competition Commission and Booking.com marks a pivotal shift towards greater flexibility and inclusivity in the hospitality sector. 🏨✨ ✅ Empowering Providers: Accommodation providers can now set their own rates on alternative platforms, boosting competition and innovation. ✅ Consumer Benefits: Guests gain access to potentially lower prices and more tailored offerings. ✅ Supporting HDP Communities: A promising initiative to onboard and promote small, historically disadvantaged businesses could reshape the sector. We discuss the challenges and opportunities with sector expert, Neil Hughes, managing director of Providence Hotels in South Africa. This could be more than a pricing adjustment—it’s a step towards transformation, sustainability, and growth. The journey ahead requires effective partnerships and transparent strategies to realize the full potential of these changes. If you’ve heard the term “bleisure,” you won’t be surprised to learn that business events are an economic driver, representing 40% of all tourism spending in Canada. Conferences, trade shows and other business gatherings take place year-round, filling hotels, convention centres, attractions and restaurants. Additional tourism dollars are generated when business visitors return later to vacation with friends and family. The business events sector’s tremendous potential for growth is getting a boost from the new International Convention Attraction Fund, which provides funding to help cities attract major international business events to Canada. Minister of Tourism, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, said it best when she noted that business events “...showcase the best of Canada, extend our tourism season and attract business people – who typically spend twice as much as leisure travellers.” Learn how Tourism Industry Association of Canada and Meetings Mean Business Canada are working to support the business events sector: https://lnkd.in/epAcHMwB #MeetingsMeanBusinessCanada #MeetInCanada #eventprofs #meetingprofs #businessevents #meetings #cdnpoli #TIAC Minto Schneider, CDME Laura Pallotta Bradley Sutherland Grant Snider 💡Jeff Nearing Alexis Kereluk Angie Pfeifer John C. Today we delivered a significant Government election commitment for industry- something all public servants know is important - and I'm very proud of the Tourism Research Australia team in Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) for their work to measure #BusinessEvents in #Australia. A new interactive dashboard released today by the team thanks to funding provided by the Australian Government provides the official statistics on business events and related #travel expenditure and demonstrates the impact of events like conferences, trade fairs and expos within the Australian #VisitorEconomy. The new #data today shows business events contributed $20.9b to Australia's #economy in 2023 including: - $10.4b on food, drink, and accommodation, - $4.4b on domestic airfares, and - $1.1b on tours and entertainment. Of the $20.9b total, $2.6b was spent in Australia by international visitors. The remaining $18.3b of spend included $16.9b from domestic overnight travel and $1.4b through domestic daytrips to attend business events. International visitation for business events was in a recovery phase during 2023. International visitor numbers for 2023 (742,000) were at 71% of pre-COVID figures (compared to 2019). No one comes here for the weather 👀 Belfast demand peaks in the summer months but the beauty of being a capital city is that people come here all year round for all sorts of reasons. We host guests attending conferences at the world class ICC Belfast | Waterfront Hall | Ulster Hall We host guests working in or with Queen's University Belfast We have repeat bookings from all kinds of businesses and corporates that come here again and again, year after year. Then of course the steady stream of leisure visitors coming from all around the world to sample our world famous #hospitality. Even in October we were over 80% occupied with an average length of stay of 5 nights and average nightly rate of £142. 1939 guests in this one month. Demand for quality, professional #shorttermrentals or #servicedaccommodation in #Belfast has never been higher. We need to work together as a destination to ensure we remain competitive for business travellers, conferences and leisure visitors to chose Belfast. We need more #airbnb stock or we risk becoming like Dublin.... A dear hole 👀 Let's go Team Belfast 💪 Visit Belfast Tourism Ireland Tourism Northern Ireland Belfast City Council

The latest Tourism Research Australia data for the year ending March 2024 shows domestic overnight conference visitors to NSW spent on average $530 per night, which is 133.8 per cent higher than domestic leisure visitors spend per night. Destination NSW recently introduced new messaging for Business Events NSW, aligned to the ‘Feel New’ visitor brand - ‘Corporate events that feel anything but’ – to drive business events growth in regional NSW. The messaging highlights how NSW takes business events beyond the boardroom. From Ballina to Bateman’s Bay and Gosford to Griffith, every corner of the state is filled with unique and immersive experiences that ensure long-lasting memories, not just a stack of business cards. NSW visitor economy businesses can take advantage of the opportunities presented by the business events sector by creating a free listing on the Business Events NSW website at bensw.com.au. More visitation and expenditure data, plus information on how to maximise your Business Events NSW listing, is available at https://lnkd.in/g7x6xQmR #feelnew #feelnsw #visitoreconomy #destinationnsw #businessevents #regionalnsw #BENSW

It was fantastic to be part of the Lights On Western Sydney – Visitor Economy Forum at the new Western Sydney Conference Centre in Penrith today. Another great joint event hosted by Penrith Chamber and Blue Mountains Tourism as we contemplate a shared future. The key messages rolled out by government, industry group and business leaders were the same time and again: Western Sydney International Airport is coming in less than three years and tourism operators and communities must prepare now or miss the flight into the future. An initial 4 million visitors are expected to step off the planes in the first year alone. We need to start thinking about who they will be, intercept their plans and direct them around the region. You may have been to the Gold Coast for a holiday, but I bet you never thought before you went (chances are, it wouldn’t have mattered to you anyway) that two of the theme parks are 46km from the airport. So, 46km from WSI airport is Mt Victoria on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, the Hawkesbury in the north and nearly at the edge of Wollondilly in the south – with a whole lot in between. Our new visitors could come from anywhere in the world and stay for longer. They’ll want to flip the current norm and base themselves in Western Sydney (probably around Penrith or the Blue Mountains) and take day trips to Sydney CBD. Are we ready for this? Not yet. We need more product – beds, tables, activities – and a co-ordinated plan. But events like Lights On Western Sydney will enable the industry to grow together to make sure we are ready. We’ve got some ambitious plans in the works and I can’t wait to share them. #visitbluemountains #penrithishere #lightsonwesternsydney #wsi #tourismindustry
