A skyscraper topples: The Trianon tower in Frankfurt is a 670 million project, a silver tower dominating the skyline, and most of all - insolvent. With energy and water supply difficulties, even the grandeur of architecture can hold little against it.  When rains flood cities and towns habitually and yet water is scarce only a few months later, not only the existing infrastructure is affected. We must plan expansions, and building projects accordingly.  The industry must not only adapt to the new climate, but to new regulations and societal expectations. Innovative approaches are a must. Integrating natural capital into project planning and turning additional costs into valuable investments in nature-positive infrastructure pave the way to a sustainable future. In Saint Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Gmuden, Austria, a contemporary railway station debuted in 2023. A series of canopies rooves allow for an abundance of natural like to illuminate the interior spaces and reduce the need for lighting throughout the day. The state of the art station, utilizes heat pumps for its heating and cooling systems and solar photovoltaics to power a majority of the station. Minimal material usage and locally sourced timber further reduces the projects carbon footprint, and creates a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. An inspirational sustainable addition to the world of public transportation, hopefully more projects just like this will take shape in our cities. 📝 UIC Barcelona School of Architecture and House Habitat have signed a collaboration agreement aimed at promoting research in the development of sustainable, efficient and healthy housing. The agreement sets out the cooperation of both entities in the development and implementation of scientific research programmes and projects in bioclimatic architecture. “This agreement reinforces our commitment to research in sustainable architecture. Nowadays, design for climate adaptation is a priority in the built environment worldwide. It was one of the topics discussed during the UIA Congress of Architects in Copenhagen last year, and my findings have already been published in the Congress proceedings. In short, the best we can do is explore new ways of enhancing the living conditions of humans and non-humans in urban environments. Not only by designing new buildings with sustainability in mind but also by retrofitting existing ones.
