Conserving these habitats is essential for maintaining biodiversity. 2. #EconomicImportance: The fishery, recognized as a 'Sunrise Sector', has seen a double-digit average annual growth, supporting around 28 million people, including marginalized and vulnerable communities. Sustainable fishing practices and healthy marine ecosystems are vital for the economic well-being of these communities. 3. #ClimateRegulation: Oceans play a crucial role in regulating the global climate. Healthy oceans help mitigate the impacts of #ClimateChange. 4. #CulturalSignificance: Coastal and marine areas have cultural significance for many communities in India, with numerous religious and social practices tied to the sea. 5. #MarineTourism: India's coastal regions are popular tourist destinations. Preserving the natural beauty and cleanliness of these areas is important for the tourism industry. 6. #InternationalCommitments: India is a signatory to various international agreements and conventions aimed at marine conservation, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (#UNCLOS). 7. #Food Security: The oceans are a source of new discoveries, from marine species to pharmaceutical compounds. Investing in ocean conservation can lead to advancements in science and technology. 8. #PollutionControl: India's oceans are threatened by pollution, including plastic waste, which can harm marine life and human health. The Irish Sea Network is calling for more joined-up marine planning, as the Irish Sea’s wildlife and habitats face an uncertain future. With ambitious targets for net zero and 30 by 30 set by all six nations surrounding the Irish Sea, the extra demand for space in an already busy sea means there will be conflict between industries and uncertainty for sea users. The Irish Sea Network is calling for strategic effective and aligned Marine Spatial Prioritisation*. While it may be a difficult and sensitive task to prioritise activities in the Irish Sea it must be done urgently, with tackling the climate and nature crises at the heart of the decision-making process. Exploring our pilot sites 📍 Eilat is a coastal city in southern #Israel, known for its stunning #coralreefs in the Red Sea. 🪸🐠 The area is a unique #biodiversity hotspot, home to vibrant coral ecosystems and a wide array of marine life. Unlike many other reefs, Eilat’s corals have shown some resilience to warming seas, making it a critical site for conservation efforts. 🌡️🌊 However, it faces threats from #climatechange, #pollution, and #tourism, making projects like OCEAN CITIZEN’s reef protection and restoration initiatives essential for preserving this rare marine treasure. 🤝🩵 Partnering with local institutions, #OceanCitizen supports reef restoration and aims to protect this biodiverse marine ecosystem from climate change and human impacts.
