Psychologists for Primary Care please. Investment in the mental health of children and young people is a wise and necessary investment. At the Best Practice Show Birmingham, there was a talk from a wonderful team (from Wigan Borough Federated Healthcare I believe). An insightful project focusing on social prescribing for young people. 👉 it is apparent in considering adult mental health, that patients are not well equipped with the psychological skills to enable optimal benefit from treatments. This leads to poorer outcomes and disengagement from adult services. Interventions for younger people help strengthen psychological skills. It’s an investment for future adult mental health, as well as essential for current younger person mental health. 👉 Mental health service waiting times are huge and the system is congested. Good social support for young people AND the people around them can, in some cases, remove the need for specialist mental health service input. 👉 Community based social prescribing (with integrated Psychologist input, interaction with schools etc) can help improve the efficiency of referrals for Autism / ADHD. More thoughts: 👉 Lifestyle factors such as optimal nutrition, sleep quality, physical activity, outdoor time, reduction in harmful substances (vaping, energy drinks, SCREEN TIME) - these can all help support better mental health. 👉 Social connection, Intergenerational support. Facilitating positive social connection such as with older generations offers mutual benefits. For younger people, it offers insight, experience, wisdom. We need investment in mental health services and also strong foundations upstream to improve the mental health of younger people. #MentalHealth #MentalWellbeing #YoungerPeopleMentalHealth #SocialPrescribing #PsychologistsInPrimaryCare

The Care Quality Commission's annual State of Care report finds the needs of children and young people's mental health are not being met. "The report highlights the pressing need to provide timely care for children and young people." "However, this will only be possible with significant investment into the workforce to help tackle waiting lists and delays to accessing treatment and support." I have experience working within an innovative GP practice that has an amazing Clinical Psychologist leading their in-house Psychology team. It’s invaluable in my opinion. General Practice / Primary Care needs Psychologists.
