WidEnergy is a women-led social enterprise in Zambia that offers affordable d.light solar-powered home systems, payable in installments. Zambia is one of the most energy-poor countries in the world with an electrification rate of less than 4% in rural areas. The severe lack of energy access in the country and poor grid reliability in urban areas has led to a dearth of power provision across the country. The average household spends up to 30% of their limited income on kerosene, batteries, or diesel generators, which are expensive and environmentally harmful.  To date, WidEnergy has provided over 30,000 people with lighting powered by clean energy. This wouuld be the third loan from Widenergy on Kiva. WidEnergy is working to reach their mission of lighting up 50,000 households by 2024.

ENGIE Energy Access, Africa’s leading PAYGO and mini-grid provider, has begun constructing 15 solar mini-grids in Zambia's Eastern Province. Part of the EU-funded IAEREP programme, this initiative aims to bring reliable electricity to underserved families and businesses, fostering economic growth and improving socio-economic welfare. MySol Grid Zambia will construct, own, operate, and maintain these mini-grids, set to be operational by the end of 2024, serving 40,000 rural residents and supporting SDG 7. Since 2017, ENGIE has significantly impacted Zambia with over 250 employees, 650 sales agents, and 60 points of presence. This is a major step towards sustainable development in Africa. Since 2012 we have shared the sun with Little Sun. Our pico solar units have made their way around the world, and it has been thrilling to see how holding solar energy in the palm of your hand has inclusive power, and the power to create change. We have done our best to support a just transition, and we always aimed to do more - our target was to support entrepreneurship, to allow income generation, to create opportunities. Almost every conversation we had during the past twelve years revolved around the simple question: how can you, how can we, deliver more? More energy, more opportunity, more compassion, more inclusivity. Moving from product company to “energy provider” has been our target since day one, and our conversations in communities showed us that the key to delivering energy is to connect it to productivity and income opportunities. So we spent the past years investigating possible productive use applications of solar energy. We researched with our team and / or close partners in Ethiopia, in Senegal, in Tanzania, in South Africa, and in Zambia. We tested technical solutions and worked our way into understanding communities’ potential produce, current income, and opportunities. We checked out value chains. We read reports, we talked to friends across the globe. From GOGLA to Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, RMI to the The World Bank, in conversation with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), Power Africa, and many others, we read it all. Smallholder farmers, solar distributors, retailers, businesspeople, community organisations, cooperatives, NGOs, innovators, friends - we talked to everyone. So much opportunity, Yet so many challenges and few financially truly viable programs. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mulenga Chanda from Zambia who values social inclusion as much as providing reliable renewable energy. Around 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still don’t have energy access at home – 11 million of them in Zambia. Connecting these people to light and power and supporting them to live sustainably is Namene’s purpose. In Zambia alone, Namene has already delivered over  725,000 solar lights to over 1.2 million people.  Working in Zambia can be challenging. Much of the population lives rurally, in towns sparsely spread across difficult terrain, and many have insecure or low-incomes. Yet this is exactly why Namene entered the market. For years, communities here have relied on kerosene lamps and candles as their only source of lighting and know all too well the risks and costs associated with such dangerous and toxic fossil fuel lighting. Zambia was Namene’s first carbon project, which has since seen almost a quarter of a million solar lights delivered across all ten provinces since 2021. This rapid growth was underpinned by our trailblazing strategy to make solar lights affordable and accessible to all. Understanding the carbon value of a solar light Namene was an industry leader in understanding the carbon savings solar lights could unlock. By tapping into carbon finance as a way to subsidise the cost of our lights for end-users, we have been able to give over one million Zambians their first step on the clean energy ladder.   Making truly affordable, low-cost, high-quality solar lights breaks the barrier of affordability, something @name customers say they have never had before. In doing this, Namene managed to achieve a 90% market share in Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, where their carbon projects first began.  Affordability is the foundation of our strategy. d.light has been selected to participate in the Kenya Off Grid Solar Access Project #KOSAP to bring solar power and clean cooking solutions to over 150,000 people in underserved rural counties. The solution will be applied through the company's "PayGo" installment payment system to ensure affordability. The World Bank-funded initiative targets 14 counties across Kenya's north, east, and south-east regions, addressing critical energy access gaps in areas not covered by the national grid. This aligns with recent data showing that 24% of Kenya's population lacks electricity access, with rural areas particularly affected at 34% without connection. D.light's participation falls under Component 2 of KOSAP, which has received $15.7 million in funding, with $9.3 million dedicated to off-grid solar solutions and $6.4 million for clean cookstoves.
