Climate change is happening all around us, and the #FoodSystem is both a cause and casualty. 🌍🍽️ There are many ways the food system can drive positive change and reduce its environmental impact. 🌱👇 Our Net Zero Food System mission framework is based on three targets where the EIT Food community can have the most impact, and in the areas of greatest need. These are: 1️⃣ Establishing regenerative agriculture as a commercially viable option in key value chain 2️⃣ Reducing food loss and waste 3️⃣ Growing the circular food economy through packaging and labelling This is reflected in our community building and advocacy activities and underpins the design of our funding and partnership opportunities. Mitigating Climate Change Through Sustainable Food Systems As a Food Engineering graduate passionate about driving sustainable solutions in the food industry, I believe the fight against climate change starts with rethinking our food systems. EIT Food highlights five impactful strategies to achieve this: 1. Increase Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture: Adopting practices that restore soil health, conserve water, and reduce emissions is essential. 2. Reduce Loss of Natural Landscapes and Increase Biodiversity: Protecting ecosystems and encouraging agroforestry to boost biodiversity and reduce carbon footprints. 3. Support Local Food Production: Shorter supply chains cut transportation emissions and empower local economies. 4. Promote Dietary Shifts and Increase Protein Diversification: Transitioning to plant-based and alternative proteins lowers greenhouse gas emissions significantly. 5. Implement Sustainable Food Packaging: Eco-friendly packaging reduces waste and environmental pollution. Additional Steps: - Embrace Circular Economy Practices: Reducing food waste and repurposing by-products into valuable resources. - Invest in Smart Farming Technologies: Leveraging AI and IoT for precision agriculture to optimize inputs and minimize environmental impacts. - Strengthen Policy Frameworks: Advocating for policies that incentivize sustainable practices across the supply chain. EIT Food and other stakeholders are already leading innovative efforts to build net-zero food systems. To scale these initiatives, we must strengthen collaborations, invest in R&D, and support startups driving impactful change. As someone deeply committed to sustainable solutions, I am inspired to contribute to the transformation of food systems into resilient, eco-friendly networks that address global challenges effectively. #SustainableFoodSystems #ClimateAction #FoodEngineering #NetZero #CircularEconomy #SustainablePackaging #RegenerativeAgriculture #EITFood

The food, agriculture and land (FALU) use vertical is a huge contributor to the climate crisis. 🧑🌾🥩🥛 According to estimates in our white paper, our food chain contributes as much as 22% of all GHG emissions annually. 🚜🏭 We drastically need to end the biodiversity impact of overfarming and overproduction. We also need new technologies which can increase circularity, and offer creative ways to reduce food chain waste and emissions. ⭕🌲 At World Fund, we’ve backed a number of startups tackling biodiversity loss in the food chain, such as Planet A Foods. We’ve also invested in Startups improving the efficiency of protein production, such as ENOUGH and Farmless, and creative brands developing new and exciting food groups from scratch, such as Juicy Marbles. This is why we’re proud to be part of a group of 100+ civil organisations today calling for new European Union legislation on sustainable agri-resource management. We can’t tackle the climate crisis without tackling a food chain failing the planet. You can read the open letter - published this morning - in full here: https://bit.ly/4aSjIWj

This #WorldFoodDay, we're shining a spotlight on the changemakers that are helping the food sector transition to sustainable practices. Our food systems are broken - but they can be fixed when farmers, communities, governments, and industries collaborate to promote soil health, sustainable production, regenerative practices, and cutting food waste in a transformative way. Until end of October, we will highlight real-world stories and lessons from our demonstration projects across Europe, to illustrate what systemic change looks like on the ground. By connecting the dots between sustainable farming models, bridging urban-rural divides, and supporting agritech innovators, we aim to accelerate the shift toward healthier, more resilient food systems for all. Today on FAO’s #WorldFoodDay we are highlighting the importance of smallholder and family farmers for our global food systems. Smallholder farmers produce around a third of the world’s food and are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, but they are often excluded from decision-making processes around sustainable food systems. Regen10 and our partners are working to change this by supporting inclusive collaboration across the value chain, with farmers and landscape stewards at the center. This includes through our Outcomes-Based Framework, which has been developed in consultation with farmers and other food system actors, and our Transition Pathways series which highlights the need for long-term and sustained financial support to help farmers achieve a regenerative transition. As we celebrate #WorldFoodDay, we reflect on how we can transform our global food systems to support both people and the planet. 🌎 Through the One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme, we are tackling some of the most pressing challenges: 🍽 Reducing food loss and waste: With nearly one-third of all food produced globally lost or wasted, we are implementing strategies to reduce waste along the entire food value chain—from farm to fork. 🌱 Advancing regenerative farming practices: By promoting techniques that restore soil health, enhance water retention, and increase biodiversity. 🌿 Restoring biodiversity: We are working to reverse this trend by fostering sustainable agricultural practices that protect ecosystems and restore natural habitats. 💧 Tackling climate and pollution: From reducing emissions in food production to curbing pollution from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, we are addressing the environmental impacts of agriculture in a holistic way. The One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme brings together governments, businesses, and civil society to build food systems that are sustainable, resilient, and inclusive. ➡ Learn More: https://lnkd.in/em4-G4Mi

This is an important short video 🎬 on improving our relationship with food and how we produce, supply and consume it. The WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, have produced a short video to celebrate #worldfoodday. It calls for better alignment, collaboration and joined up thinking on sustainability between all public and private players in the agrifood system - including business and consumers - to focus on responsibly producing nourishing food. Thanks to the WBCSD for putting this together as it’s vital that we better join the dots on sustainability - in this case agriculture, health, society, environment, business, natural environment, supply chain and biodiversity but to name a few.
