The world’s largest hydrogen-powered ships ◼ Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten Nord has awarded Myklelbust Shipyard a contract for what, it says, will be the world’s two largest hydrogen powered ferries. ◼ With a length of 117 meter and a capacity of up to 120 cars, they will carry operate on Norway’s longest ferry route between Bodø and Lofoten, with a distance of around 166 kilometers. They will be bunkered with hydrogen produced in Bodø. ◼ A hydrogen storage unit onboard the vessel will feed gas to the fuel cells, creating electricity to propel the vessels and power their auxiliary systems, reducing CO2-emissions on the route by around 26,500 tons each year. ◼ The hydrogen-powered ferries will be delivered from Myklebust Verft during 2026. Battery and hydrogen fuel cell specialist Corvus Energy has been awarded DNV Type Approval for its Pelican Fuel Cell System, which will see vehicle manufacturer Toyota’s fuel cell technology used to enhance the provision of battery electric vessels for the marine market. The automotive industry is making rapid advances with development of electric vehicles and the potential environmental and efficiency wins has naturally not gone unnoticed in the world of shipping. Battery-electric technology in the form of all-electric and hybrid is now a regular feature with new ships of all sizes, so a sharing of automotive industry knowledge with the marine sector can be seen as a natural development. The Corvus Pelican Fuel Cell System was developed through the three-year H2NOR project and claims to be the first fuel cell system designed to be inherently gas-safe, ‘making it the safest fuel cell system in the market’, according to Corvus. Positive progress is reported with the first installation ready for the fishing and training vessel Skulebas, owned by Vestland County and operated by Måløy Upper Secondary School in Norway. The 35m long vessel already has a 1MWh battery system and by adding the Pelican Fuel Cell System and hydrogen storage, Skulebas will be able to operate for four days with zero emissions, says Corvus. #WindPower 🔷 In addition to 37.5m WindWings®, the smaller 20m & 24m sails designed for handysize bulkers, chemical tankers, and smaller vessels, will also be manufactured & distributed by WindWaves (Spain) on behalf of the designers BAR Technologies (UK). Weighing less than 30 tonnes, the new range are extremely economical and simple to fit on both newbuilds and retrofits. The fuel-saving capabilities of the original WindWings®’ were independently validated by DNV-Maritime in May 2024. Their deployment on vessels such as the Pyxis Ocean and Berge Olympus has already demonstrated a 32% reduction in energy use per nautical mile, solidifying WindWings® as a reliable and validated choice for shipowners. Under the terms of this updated agreement, WindWaves will manage the value chain of procurement and construction of 20m and 24m WindWings®, and their installation at shipyards across Europe. Additionally, WindWaves will manage the servicing of WindWings® during their operational life cycle, alongside crew training on the operation of the wing sails. “Benefitting from our history in manufacturing for the wind sector, we look forward to supporting BAR Technologies with their new 20m-24m WindWings® and continuing the trajectory towards a cleaner and decarbonized global shipping sector.” Mr. Roberto Bouzas General Manager of WindWaves. On 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, 𝐘𝐆𝐓’𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧,𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐄𝐕, handed over the vessel to 𝐎𝐏𝐋 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝, marking the start of the trials. Earlier this year, Statkraft modernized the power plant in Åby on the Lagan River, using innovative technology from Amorbach, Germany. Our #DIVETurbine is the best solution to replace old Francis Camelback turbines without having high costs for civil works. The two DIVE-Turbines generate clean energy even at low water flow thanks to their unique speed regulation. The most ground-breaking feature? The generator is submerged underwater in a diving bell, which allows for a compact bearing arrangement and a wear free shaft seal. The construction is so durable that the unit is practically maintenance-free for up to 25 years. DIVE Turbines' bearing system, based on angular contact ball bearings from SKF Group is robust enough to withstand critical situations like runaway speeds – when the turbine loses connection to the grid and reaches high rotational speeds. As a result, the turbine does not need to be emergency shut down, which is a significant advantage. This upgrade is expected to increase electricity production and contribute to the continued focus on #renewableenergy in #Sweden. View from the Office. Met Vidar Lie for drinks at The Landing shortly after he flew into Newark Airport from Norway. Vidar had an IPA; I had a Negroni. The Landing is a restaurant tucked into the second floor lobby at One Penn, an office building across from Madison Square Garden. It’s a gem of a place for meetings, not crowded, with free and fast Wifi, comfy sofas and giant wall screen TVs. Vidar is a project and engineering manager at Equinor, formed from Statoil, the former Norwegian state-oil company. He was visiting for work. Vidar told me about two big projects the company has been working on and the scope of both blew my mind. Equinor’s Empire Wind project is building a huge wind farm offshore in New York. It has a huge facility in Brooklyn to stage turbines that I knew nothing about. Empire Wind’s initial stage will power 500,000 homes, part of an effort to shift more production to clean energy. Equinor also has a project near Bergen to capture carbon emissions and store them in a natural vault 2,500 meters below the ocean. Let me say it again because it sounds so insane. They collect industrial emissions that would have otherwise been spewed into the atmosphere and transport them via ship to the North Sea and inject them into geological formations for storage. It’s still a pilot project, but it has the ambitious goal of significantly decarbonizing European industries. The project is a partnership with Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies. Every day I’m reminded that there are so many big, inspirational things going on all over the world that we don’t know about. Even in our own backyard. #viewfromoffice

In a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize shipping sustainability, Dutch shipowner 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐅𝐏𝐒), in collaboration with the EU-funded Flagships project and the Interreg-funded ZEM Ports NS project, has unveiled the H2 Barge 2, a hydrogen-powered vessel set to operate emissions-free along the Rhine between Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Duisburg, Germany. Previously known as Fenny 1 and FPS Waal, the vessel underwent a remarkable transformation at 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 (𝐇𝐒𝐆) in Werkendam, where all conventional combustion engines and fossil fuel tanks were replaced with a state-of-the-art, 100% emission-free propulsion system. Featuring PEM fuel cells, hydrogen storage, battery packs, and an electric drive train, with six fuel cells from Ballard Power Systems boosting its power to 1.2 MW, the H2 Barge 2 marks a significant milestone in the quest for sustainable shipping solutions. As the flagship project's first of two demonstrators and the second demonstrator of the 𝐙𝐄𝐌 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐍𝐒 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, the vessel is projected to mitigate 3,000 tons of CO2 annually, ushering in a new era of environmentally friendly 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. #Shipping #Sustainability #HydrogenPower #EmissionsReduction #Innovation #EUProjects #RhineTransport #MaritimeTechnology NC:Offshore Energy
