🇪🇺 Do you know that the upcoming European elections ( 6 - 9 June) are a make or break moment for the #EuropeanGreenDeal ? And: you wonder who to vote for/ who of the Members of the Parliament support a healthy planet and healthy people? 🌏 👀 Have a look at the scoreboard (see below): An analysis on: How have Members of the European Parliament European Parliament 🇪🇺 voted in the past on the #EuropeanGreenDeal - the EU's political answer to the planetary crisis (climate, biodiversity and pollution)? 😍 An amazing work by a coalition of European environmental and climate NGOs: deep analysis of almost 40 political files on climate, nature and pollution reveals that 🌳 only a minority of parliamentarians actually voted as protectors of the people and the planet: The Greens and the Left. 🐌 Other political groups acted as procrastinators and delayers or even as 🛑 "prehistoric thinkers" (amongst them: the European People's Party EPP who obstructed ALL files on #nature). 🫵 Have you checked the EU Parliament Scoreboard? 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBmmqzje Similarly to the great work of BLOOM Association - BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, European Environmental Bureau, Transport & Environment (T&E) and WWF European Policy Office have analyzed European Parliament voting records of the last five years to provide citizens with an interactive overview that scores all the national political parties and European Parliamentary Groups based on their voting performance. This provides a measure of MEPs commitment to environmental sustainability – with the result being a score out of 100. Faustine Bas-Defossez, Director for Nature, Health and Environment at the European Environmental Bureau: ‘Citizens across Europe have a critical opportunity in the upcoming EU elections to steer our continent towards a future that prioritises health, is toxic-free and tackles the urgent challenge of the pollution crisis we face. Are you still in the process of building a solid ground for your vote in the European Elections coming up in June? 🇪🇺 📩 Then you should take a look at the EU Parliament Scoreboard, recently published by Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, BirdLife Europe and Central Asia; European Environmental Bureau, WWF European Policy Office and Transport & Environment (T&E). It provides an overview of votes by political groups at EU levels and parties at national levels on key policies on climate action, nature restoration and protection from pollution. Unsurprisingly, there are huge differences with regards to their willingness and reliability to promote laws in favour of a just sustainability transition ❗ Scores range from as little as 6-25 in the group of 🦖Prehistoric thinkers to 70-92 in the group of the 🛡️Protectors. 👀 Who are 🛡️Protectors, 🐌Procrastinators and 🦖Prehistoric Thinkers at European Parliament? 😱 Our new in-depth European Parliament Scoreboard reveals that only a minority of 2019-2024 MEPs acted as Protectors of the Green Deal. It is something I've always found fascinating during elections time... Why do we vote based on programs, promises, and the ability to debate, rather than action being taken in the past? Actions speaker louder than words doesn't seem to apply in this case. Thinking about it, I can imagine some reasons. First, a strong debater who talks about your concerns or hopes is enticing to listen to. Second, really understanding how parties acted over the course of multiple years can be challenging. Some new faces might represent the EU in the next 5 years, but the political priorities will stay the same: to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and protect our health. But leading the green transition is no easy job. It requires skills, dedication, and time. That’s why we need someone in the European Commission to represent the interests of people and the planet, full-time: a Vice-President for People and the Environment. We’re asking the future President of the European Commission to make this role a reality. The call for climate justice is growing stronger and stronger in The Hague. Read our key takeaways from day 7 of the historic climate hearings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ): - The United Kingdom, while itself stuck in its colonial past, urged the Court to ignore historical emissions when it comes to climate accountability by rejecting the longstanding customary obligation to prevent transboundary harm. It shamelessly cloaked its denial of its own responsibility in a hollow commitment to those least responsible for climate change, warping the principles of climate justice beyond recognition. This implicit dismissal of the relevance of human rights obligations was particularly disparaging, coming on Human Rights Day. - Romania followed suit, dismissing the relevance of past actions in addressing climate damage. - Peru, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Saint Lucia sharply countered that cumulative greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are central to a fair allocation of responsibility and reparations. - Industrialized States relied heavily on climate treaties in their quest to escape accountability, while Panama, Peru, Palau, the DRC, the Dominican Republic, and Saint Lucia underscored that climate treaties do not displace other applicable obligations under relevant duties, like prevention of environmental harm. - On a positive note, the Netherlands and Portugal emphasized the imperative to phase out fossil fuels and protect the right to a healthy environment, respectively. Outside the Court, the People’s Museum opened to amplify survivor stories.
