🏢👩💼 The European Commission, in collaboration with the Disability Platform members and social partners, developed guidelines and best practices for Reasonable accommodation at work. The guidelines provide information on employers' obligations to ensure reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities and also how to implement these in practice for a more accessible and inclusive work environment for all employees. The NSW Public Service Commissioner Kathrina Lo has today issued a statutory Direction to all NSW government sector agency heads to implement a workplace adjustments policy that meets certain minimum standards by 1 November 2025. To assist agencies to comply with the direction, the Office of the Public Service Commissioner has developed a Model Workplace Adjustments Policy and a variety of resources, including factsheets and a manager/employee conversation guide. The direction, together with the model policy, support the NSW Government’s commitment to increase disability employment in the sector by establishing a consistent sector-wide approach to workplace adjustments. Effective workplace adjustments are an important enabler for many employees, particularly people with disability. They support participation in the workforce and enable people to perform at their best to deliver high-quality services for the people of NSW. While agencies have until 1 November 2025 to comply with the direction, agencies are strongly encouraged to implement a workplace adjustments policy and supporting processes before that date where possible. Workplace adjustments are essential for creating an inclusive environment where all employees can thrive! In the lead up to International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Dec 3, we're sharing three tips to ensure you are providing people with disability the right tools and support to perform their roles effectively: Tip 1: Streamline the process! Implement a centralised workplace adjustments process that is simple and appoint a designated workplace adjustments officer to coordinate requests. Tip 2: Empower your managers by providing disability confidence training and resources for all line managers. Be sure to offer ongoing support! Tip 3: Listen and build trust. Actively listen and believe employees when they ask for adjustments and avoid interrogation. Foster a safe environment by encouraging open dialogue about workplace needs and challenges.
