This is a gratitude post. On Tuesday, SmartOrg launched a new website for our Innovation Navigator software. A lot of work goes into what appears to be quite a simple thing. We live in a world of "move fast, run experiments, and test-and-learn," yet there is still a strong desire (by all of us, I assume) to do good work, to avoid embarrassment, and to get it right (or close to right) the first time. I admit, I struggle to find that balance sometimes. Over the past couple of months, I've straddled that line, sometimes on one side, and sometimes on the other. Many thanks to David Matheson for keeping me focused on progress, not perfection (H/T Emma Lovewell). This work would have taken MUCH longer without Teresa Parmele by my side doing all the tactical things I don't know how to do. We built our prototype site. I created a bunch of not-so-great videos that were far too long. Our design work looked like it was created by non-designers (accurate!). But then we took the leap of faith and shared it with people in our network to get feedback. And thank goodness we did. Their feedback was SO. INCREDIBLY. HELPFUL. They took time out of their busy days to look at our stuff and offer lengthy, meaningful observations and suggestions. It caused us to revise nearly everything, delaying the site launch by at least 4 weeks. It certainly isn't perfect -- but it is all the better for it. These individuals had no incentive to offer help other than to be helpful. So I offer sincere thanks to the following friends, former (future?!?!) customers, and innovation community connections who offered time and expertise simply because someone in their circle asked for help: John Klick, Daniel Ostrower, Keith Hopper, Alex Slawsby, Ellen S., Zarak Khan, Bill Rohde, Mohamed ElZayatie, and Jeff Riley. I feel lucky and grateful to be connected to each of you.
