Last month Footwork and Platform Places peers convened in Liverpool City Region to learn from the city’s thriving community-led neighbourhood transformation initiatives. The morning was spent in the Baltic Triangle with Erika Rushton of Kindred LCR and Baltic Creative CIC, who walked us through her journey of revitalising a derelict warehouse into a vibrant space that now nurtures over 180 local enterprises. During the afternoon with Liam Kelly of Make CIC, peers toured their Make Hamilton space. Once an abandoned building, now repurposed into a vibrant community hub offering affordable studio spaces, workshops and event spaces for creatives. Both stories of the successes of community-led transformation, demonstrate the power of grassroots creativity. Peers witnessed firsthand how vision, resilience and community-led action can transform not only neighbourhoods, but lives. #Placemaking is a collaborative innovation process that works across disciplines, organisations and interests for a common goal - creating better places. The approach is a 'silo-buster'. The High Street Taskforce's six years of work in the UK found that: "The paucity of place partnerships across the country was a key barrier to progress. The need to restructure local governance arrangements to mobilise expertise, enthusiasm and effort from the business and the wider community was the number one recommendation of HSTF experts." Collaborative #place governance is a low-cost, high-impact approach to improve high street and place outcomes. Hi. What’s next for floe??? TLDR; We're building a new technology platform to connect people and spaces. And we no longer operate the Maybrook House building. We'll give more updates on the new tech project and what it actually is! To subscribe and support check the linkey out here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eNTfCD8J ✉️ The last couple of years have been a whirlwind journey for floe. After opening a coworking space in the centre of Newcastle at Maybrook House, so much happened. The community response to floe, and their transformation of what is just a space for people to work in, has been unbelievable! We’ve seen so many successes come through the doors to work in floe. Companies like Grid Finder, who were acquired in a 7-figure deal just a year and a half from their founding by the brilliant Thomas Stapley-Bunten and Nikhil Patel (https://lnkd.in/e3dgBRaw )! Or recently, PolyBox.app, who have successfully raised their £500,000 investment round (https://lnkd.in/eWfRz82U) with inspiring founders Rojin Yarahmadi and Nikolaos B.. Although the headlines show the end-goal success, they don’t show the process which everyone goes through every day to build companies which achieve these things. In the end, much of the work which happens in floe everyday is never reported on! It’s always process which matters in a good workspace, and floe is no different. On the 3rd floor of Maybrook house, the process of working was made fun and collaborative. What’s next?? The process of maintaining a space is not easy, and the time has come for floe to move into a new phase of enabling more fun and collaborative work. To do this we've parted ways with Maybrook House and are focusing on a new project. So what new project? In short, it's a single platform to connect people and spaces in the North-East. We've set out to answer these questions: How do we include and showcase rural workspaces in the future of work? How can we help support the amazing coworking and flexible offices which exist and will exist in the North-East? How can companies offer more flexibility and community to be more attractive to talent? We think the answer is in how we use our workspaces and community, which is why we’re making a tool to make it easier to connect with both. We're calling it the FLOE MAP! Stay tuned for more information about the journey of creating, and drop us your email on the wee landing page by following the link in this post :) More access to the brilliant spaces and community in the North-East. What could be better???

Bilston has a history of doing things its own way. Legacies of making, social organising and innovation have cultivated a unique local energy — not least the first UK town to index happiness. With new central government funding coming into the town over the next decade, residents must be empowered to draw on this legacy to seed new cultural growth in Bilston. We’ve been working to produce a Cultural Infrastructure Micro-Plan to set a trajectory for culture rooted in local values. We’ve worked with the West Midlands Combined Authority and City of Wolverhampton Council – supported by collaborators PRD and Stockdale – and connected with local stakeholders who will take forwards opportunities. Current momentum to strengthen Bilston’s offer as a place for culture is strong and over £45 million is destined for Bilston across the next ten years. This micro-plan for Bilston’s cultural development recommends four priority projects. These projects align closely with Bilston’s cultural requirements and aim to leverage existing and emerging cultural initiatives, such as those led by the Gazebo Theatre, the new Urban Room, Bilston Market regeneration efforts, and the grassroots music scene. We recognise it is important to ensure opportunities for culture lock in Bilston’s values — the things like happiness, cohesion, and healthy communities that have always been important to people in this place. Understanding which town centre assets can play a role in this mission, and imagining how Bilston’s creative residents can activate them, will be key first steps in embedding culture in the town. Read more about how the Cultural Infrastructure Micro-Plan will do this: https://lnkd.in/eR2hzH2z #culture #creativity #westmidlands #bilston #towns #gazebotheatre #urbanroom

Imagine a downtown where interesting and beautiful places keep you wanting to walk further, to see more and experience all of the diverse activity that surrounds you; (kinda like the feeling you had the first time you visited City Museum). I envision a place where people would prefer to not have a car when living in or visiting downtown because of how it takes away from the vibrant experience and sense of adventure one gets just from being there. What if we rebuilt downtown to be a fully livable, self-sustaining community that has everything one needs for a happy and healthy life, (like groceries, parks, schools, jobs, etc.) all without ever needing to get into a car? But let's not stop there. What if we built a place that was truly invigorating... a place that daily inspires creativity and sparks the innovative and creative juices waiting to be unlocked in each of our brains? We can use lessons learned from neuroscience to inform how we create such a place that stimulates our neurons. We can even tap into the brain hacks that gaming and social media companies have used to design this place by creating a compulsion loop that: 1. triggers interest, 2. provokes action (i.e., walking one more block, checking out a store/event/piece of art, etc.), 3. provides a variable reward (things change and you never know what you will experience from one day to the next), and 4. entices an investment (time, money, talent, etc.) back into the community so that each resident or visitor can leave their finger print on the place - which then triggers the interest of the next person. Let's not make the mistake of thinking that we need to build back what once was, (i.e., a central business district where people come for their 9-5 and little else). Downtown hitting "rock bottom" is our chance to build something entirely new and different. It's time to think outside the box. Please share your thoughts in the comments below. Let's start a discussion!
"My partners and I have resisted recent pressure from our own employees to “move west” because we want to be part of the solution to some of the challenges of our region, in this case a vibrant downtown." 🖊 Steve Smith, CEO of Lawrence Group & New + Found ⤵

We ❤️ this approach! When a business or organization intentionally selects local suppliers, particularly diverse local suppliers, money continues to circulate within our region. What else happens? ⬆️Community Investment increases ⬆️Hiring increases 🔗Supply chains grow more resilient and robust. Everyone wins. At BEAM, we are forging a brighter and more equitable future for local businesses. We are designing new procurement practices based on data science and best practices.
With Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh, we are spearheading a vision plan to reimagine and revitalize downtown Pittsburgh, which builds on the work of 40+ downtown-focused organizations. Our CEO Stefani Pashman and partners talked with the Pittsburgh Business Times for this feature that explores how the plan will activate our civic and public spaces so downtown becomes a neighborhood for everyone.
