📢 Climate (and energy) is a class issue 📢 As a wee guy from a working class area in the North East of Scotland, I probably think about class and social justice more often than most. In the energy sector, I'd argue we probably don't think about it enough. We know that in the UK and more broadly, lower income, marginalised and working class people experience the sharpest impacts of the climate crisis. Whether air pollution, flooding, rising food costs, extreme temperatures or virtually anything between - it's those communities who are affected most strongly. They are also the people who were hammered hardest by soaring energy bills as the price of gas skyrocketed, yet who are least likely to be able to access new technologies like solar panels and heat pumps (and all the benefits that come with them) that will protect us from shocks like this in the future. The energy transition is a massive opportunity to redress some of these inequalities, to provide healthier homes, cheaper bills, tackle fuel poverty, create new jobs and industry and support more resilient communities. It's a formative moment where everything is changing to tackle the climate crisis, where we have a whole new set of technologies and tools at our disposal to tackle generational poverty, inequality and social injustice head-on. But we have to get serious about the just transition - working with those groups and communities directly - to ensure their voices are meaningfully heard and that the benefits of new technologies and systems aren't just hoovered up by the middle classes, but are transformative for everyone as we know they can be. Had a great time chatting with Oxfam and Earthrise Studio about how climate, energy and class intersect and ensuring we open up the massive opportunity of the clean transition to everyone. Thanks Izzy Sasada and the team for putting together a really important series (and letting this wee guy from the Scottish schemes bang the drum!).
Our latest video project in collaboration with Oxfam is all about the intersections of climate change and social justice - and the latest episode sees Joi Lee investigate the relationship between climate and class. Across the world, people facing poverty are bearing the brunt of a climate crisis they had little part in creating. Yet too often, narratives surrounding climate change overlook the impacts of the crisis on growing inequality in the UK. In the third part of the series, Joi speaks to Fraser Stewart who has made it his mission to stand up for people experiencing fuel poverty in Scotland, where nearly one third of people are struggling to pay their energy bills and stay warm. We're so proud of how this episode came together - all credit goes to the incredible creative and editorial teams working their magic behind the scenes to bring this project to life! 🌍 Communities living in poverty are hit hardest by the climate and nature crises. 🌍 Communities living in poverty are hit hardest by the climate and nature crises. The climate crisis poses a life-threatening challenge to all of us, but particularly to communities who live in poverty. At its heart, the climate issue is a justice issue. The Climate and Nature Bill is coming up for a crucial vote on 24th January, and we need your help to make it happen. This bill is a game changer that will: - help the UK meet its climate promises - protect nature and wildlife - support communities most affected by climate change - make sure no one is left behind as we tackle the climate crisis We need 102 MPs to show up and vote YES for this bill to move forward. Your MP's vote matters – whether they already support it or not! #ClimateJustice #CANbill 👉 Act now: https://brnw.ch/21wPjUj

🚗 💥If you were hit in a car crash caused by someone else, yet found yourself responsible for paying for all the damages and what is more, you had to borrow money at high interest rates in order to do so FROM the very person who hit you, wouldn’t that be unfair? 😕 🤔 Now, consider this: the communities most impacted by the #ClimateCrisis 🌪️🌊 — those on the front lines who have contributed the least to #ClimateChange — are facing this reality every day. 💰When the Loss and Damage Fund was established in 2022, it represented a significant step ✅ towards recognising and addressing these injustices. Yet, almost two years later, at the time of writing, pledges to the Fund for responding to #LossAndDamage total just US$ 720 million 🕸️, equating to less than 0.2% of the estimated US$400 BILLION 💰 needed every year in the 2020s to meet the economic #LossAndDamage needs of developing countries!! And the need has only grown more urgent. 📈 🚨 For the most vulnerable communities, this funding is not just essential—it’s a matter of survival. ⚠️ But there’s another critical aspect: All #LossAndDamage finance must be grant-based, not in the form of loans or other debt-creating mechanisms that would only deepen existing financial burdens. #ClimateFinance for #LossAndDamage must be delivered as grants that do not need to be repaid. This is about ensuring equity and justice ⚖️ for countries impacted by climate change 🔥🥵☔️⛈️. Loans and other debt-based financial instruments are simply not appropriate for addressing #LossAndDamage — they risk adding insult to injury, exacerbating financial struggles for those already bearing the brunt of the #ClimateCrisis. Important message about climate loss and damage. For Loss and Damage to work, developed countries must be forthright about their debt to LDCs and SIDS regarding climate impacts due to their over-consumption and climate over-shoot. The funds need to be grant-based, not loan based in ways that benefit the Global North and private interests. Otherwise, it is colonialism all over again. It should be about climate justice and debt relief, not further debt burden. #climatejustice #lossanddamage #colonialism

Sometimes when world events seem so significant ...we feel powerless to make changes. However, by adopting the UN Sustainable Development Goals we are aligning to a set of principles as a guiding light to how we work with donors, how we make decisions on grant funding and how we provide leadership in this space in our region. Ending poverty goes hand in hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and make space for economic growth- all the while tackling the REALLY BIG ISSUES of Climate Change - working to preserving our oceans and our forests. Decades of work and global research has gone into these principles- and now at a local level we can also use these as our guide, right here in the place we call home. If you follow our progress, you will see changes in how we report the funds we receive and the grants we make into our communities. Each will show an alliance to one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals. You can help us to achieve these goals by considering the planet you want to leave behind for our childrens children.

UNICEF Aotearoa's teams from across the motu joined the School Strike 4 Climate on Friday, alongside thousands of students, whānau and community members. By standing alongside students in their call for #climateaction, we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying their voices and advocating for their rights. The #climatecrisis is a children's emergency. Over 1 billion children worldwide will be extremely impacted by climate change - yet they are the least responsible for it. Children and young people have the right to be heard on issues that affect them. This is why we launched our climate crisis appeal calling on the Government to: 1) fund a permanent youth climate advisory committee, 2) declare the climate crisis a children's emergency and 3) to sign up to the international Declaration on Children, Young People and Climate Action. too bad it's not 300 billion to fight energy poverty and improve living and economic conditions. They are suffering climate issues, they are suffering issues that are real, tangible, and addressable. health, food, shelter and economic issues. economic dispatchable power would greatly help. intermittent power is of little benefit except for investors. US and other wealthy nations pledge to donate $300 billion to poorer countries to fight climate crisis https://lnkd.in/ewxsE8Jk
