What will it take to make the economics of #precisionfermentation stack up for a wider range of bioproducts such that they can compete with low-margin, high volume products derived from petrochemicals or industrialized animal agriculture? And who is going to fund the infrastructure required to underpin all this? I caught up with experts at the recent SynBioBeta conference in San Jose to discuss everything from new tools to domesticate a broader array of microbial hosts, to cheaper and more sustainable feedstocks, continuous processing, and 'ricking' cells to be more productive. Breaking news from #Kimitec! 🚀 Once again, we’ve achieved a significant milestone in our mission to promote more sustainable, healthier agriculture. We’re thrilled to announce that our first #biomiticide, MITÖ, is now officially registered in Mexico! This remarkable achievement represents a significant stride in our commitment to a zero-residue, zero-waste future within the agri-food sector. MITÖ is the result of our dedicated efforts at the MAAVi Innovation Center , the epicenter of biotechnology innovation in Europe. Our team of over 80 specialized scientists, together with our agronomic experts, worked tirelessly to develop this revolutionary solution. Since 2015, we’ve been focused on developing sustainable alternatives to synthetic chemicals. Today, with the registration of Mitö, we’re taking a significant step towards creating a healthier and more environmentally friendly agri-food system. Our broad-spectrum natural miticide proves highly effective in controlling mites, while reducing production losses, and improving fruit quality. This registration in #Mexico is not only a milestone for Kimitec but also for the entire agricultural industry. We are excited to share this historic achievement with the world, and over the next two years it will reach Brazil, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and USA. The last year (2023) has seen a difficult environment for Cellular Agriculture (Cell Ag) companies working to commercialise cultivated meat due to CellAg companies running into financial difficulties. Although CellAg can have its challenges, the potential rewards for successfully addressing the challenges of commercialising cultivated meat products are very significant. Nick Sutcliffe explores the processes of cell culture, species-optimised cell culture and how to overcome its challenges - https://hubs.la/Q02m_hJ40 #futurefood #cellculture #cellAg #cellularagriculture #cultivatedmeatproducts #innovation #commercialisation #costreduction #patents #mewburnfuturefood

Belinda Luke for the Natural Products BioHUB 📣 After joining us for our green economy event earlier this year, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Belinda to explore the benefits she's discovered from collaborating with us. “Working with the BioHUB allows us to exploit our culture collection. CABI holds the UK fungal collection, and we are looking to bring it to industry. We want to extract either the whole organism or different elements, to then create a new product whether that be in pharmaceuticals, agriculture or other sectors. CABI can do initial screenings on organisms, with our specialty being mass production of fungus. We are looking at how we can grow them and are then judging the potential affordability of these organisms becoming a product. Our partnership with Swansea’s Natural Products BioHUB allows us to pull additional information so we can offer a better and broader service to companies”. Delighted to announce that I have taken on a mentorship role at Caligenia, a pioneering company dedicated to transforming organic waste into valuable soil amendments. Led by the visionary CEO Nicolas Barbarosch, Caligenia is at the forefront of agricultural biotechnology, creating sustainable solutions that enhance soil health and productivity. At Caligenia, we produce BACTERCHAR, an innovative product that combines ancestral soil amendment practices with the latest advancements in biotechnology. By enhancing the physical-chemical properties of the soil and boosting microbial activity, BACTERCHAR plays a crucial role in sustainable agriculture. Our team excels in developing Plant Growth Promoting Microorganisms (PGPMs) that colonize plant roots, improving growth and health by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, solubilizing nutrients, and producing bioactive compounds. These microorganisms are expertly combined with BACTERCHAR to maximize their efficacy in different agroecosystems. In addition, Caligenia is developing a sophisticated platform to predict how to rehabilitate degraded soils using the optimal combination of BACTERCHAR and PGPMs. This platform integrates various environmental and geographical data to propose tailored solutions for soil improvement. My mandate at Caligenia is international market expansion, leveraging my experience and network to bring these revolutionary agricultural solutions to a global audience. Looking forward to making a significant impact together! #Agriculture #Biotechnology #Sustainability #Mentorship #SoilHealth #Caligenia #Innovation #InternationalExpansion #EnvironmentalSolutions

🚀 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 🚀 As highlighted in our recent post https://lnkd.in/g74zisUS announcing the release of Context’s 2024 BTC – Global Ag Biotech Innovation Study, the biotech industry is thriving with a significant increase in both biotech companies and pipeline projects. The industry is experiencing explosive growth due to THREE key drivers. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀. But why now? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁? In just a decade, the #biotech landscape has dramatically evolved. Previously, a handful of companies accounted for 90% of all global submissions for GM traits, primarily focusing on herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant corn, soy, canola, and cotton. Today, however, dozens of companies and public research institutions are leading the way in developing diverse gene-edited plants and animals. These innovations focus on improving agronomy, disease resistance, increasing nutritional value, reducing food waste, and even enhancing agricultural worker safety. A significant milestone in this shift occurred in 2017, when the Broad Institute of MIT, Harvard, and Corteva began licensing CRISPR-Cas9 technology for agricultural applications. This technological advancement has opened the door for a wider array of specialized traits, beyond the traditional crop markets, and has spurred new investment in biotech solutions that align with evolving agricultural needs and consumer demands. These investments are paving the way for new pipeline projects across all industry segments and crop types, leveraging both transgenic and non-transgenic discovery methods. As specialty crops become more tailored to fit emerging trends, we expect to see continued capital flow into this space, driving biotech advancements. Stay tuned for upcoming posts discussing the other drivers fueling the substantial biotech pipeline growth!
