We are the Silviculture Innovation Program, also known as the "SIP". Our mission is to accelerate the growth of "innovative silviculture" across B.C. by improving knowledge of these systems. But, what makes silviculture innovative? It's when silviculture systems include the harvesting, growing and tending of forests to achieve holistic stewardship of the land. This means a focus on multiple values in forest management, such as water, wildfire resilience, wildlife habitat, food sovereignty and forest health - not just timber value! Learn more about us and the program at www.sip.bvcentre.ca.

In February 2023 I left my 15 year career with Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) to join the small collective of innovators and passionate professionals called Evolving Forests. It was a baptism of fire, thrown into a world of risk, excitement and “holy cow”, these projects we’re working on are pretty brilliant. Pushing the boundaries of forestry and timber use but also my own boundaries. Looking at how we can use more of our nation's timber for low-carbon solutions; how we can communicate with and join-up those that grow trees and those that use timber; how our woodlands can be managed better for timber production and biodiversity; but, also how we can make our woodlands more resilient to future challenges. We will launch our “Future of Timber” platform on the 4th December in Bristol, asking “what is the future of timber?” https://lnkd.in/ePyPW7Cg come along and have your say, what will be your answer? There is another question though and that is, “what is my future?” That is an easier question to answer based on a difficult decision to make. On 18th November I will be taking on a new role as the Institute of Chartered Foresters Technical Policy Manager. I am very excited to be joining the ICF team and going back into the cut and thrust of the policy world. Yes, I hear you cry, “are you mad?” No, I’m not. It turns out that I have rather missed representing our profession(s) and trying to use the deep rooted passion I have for our sector to make a real difference to help our people and their businesses thrive. I cannot thank the team at Evolving Forests enough for putting their faith in me, welcoming me to the fold and, on a personal level, supporting me through the last year. It’s not goodbye, it’s I’ll see you later. Until then, all at Evolving Forests keep being brilliant.

For every customer that travels with a Hotelplan UK brand, we invest in carbon removal technologies through Klimate.co as a way to remove carbon from the atmosphere on a long-term basis. Last year: ❎ We removed 18,118 CO2t of carbon… 👣 …equivalent to 13.85% of our absolute footprint 🌲 Over 80% of the carbon we removed was through forestation projects We love trees – it’s easy to grasp their social as well environmental benefits. But the reality is that at the end of a tree’s lifespan - perhaps in 50 to 70 years – the carbon it stored is released back into the atmosphere. This year, Klimate has helped rebalance our investment portfolio to support a range of projects that can lock carbon away for hundreds to thousands of years. We will continue to invest in forestry, but are proud to be helping emerging technologies develop and scale higher permanence carbon removal solutions. Here’s what our investment portfolio looks like for 2024:

Our Ecologi | B Corp™ forest is now up to 2030 trees 🌲 and we've funded 18 different projects around the world 🌍 Our most recent: > Carbon removal through afforestation in São Paulo, Brazil > Fuel-efficient cookstoves in Uganda > Avoiding methane emissions from landfill in Brazil The information we receive back: > We get to virtually meet farmers and individuals who are part of the actual replanting process and carbon avoidance projects > Learn about the projects via images and videos > See what impact it has on local communities and the planet through SDG's We know that our efforts towards a more sustainable future aren't as large and impactful as other businesses out there. We know that spending money on reforestation and carbon avoidance schemes isn't the most impressive action. So, we're keeping our updates informative, however proud we are of our digital forest.🌲 The best part for us is knowing we can trust the provider, Ecologi.
