Tonazzo makes a historic shift from meat to plant-based proteins 🌱 After 136 years in the meat industry, Italian company Tonazzo Group is making a bold move to focus entirely on plant-based proteins. As of December 31 2024, Tonazzo will cease all meat-related operations, concentrating on expanding its Kioene brand, which is already a leader in Italy's plant-based market. The company aims to reduce environmental impact and promote healthier diets through its plant-based offerings. Employees affected by this transition will have new roles within the company, supporting the expansion of Kioene. Albino Tonazzo, CEO of Kioene, said: “As early movers in this market, we feel a deep responsibility to future generations. Sweet-bio, a food-based biotech company, has announced a significant milestone in its growth journey. On the 1st of July, the company disclosed that it has successfully attracted a Series B bridge investment of ¥200 million ($1.23 million) from Lotte Ventures Japan, further solidifying its position in the market. Since its inception, Sweet-bio has been on a trajectory of rapid expansion and innovation. Following the Series A investment of ₩3 billion ($2.2 million) in December 2020 and the Series B investment of ₩10.5 billion ($76 million) in December 2022, this latest investment marks a pivotal moment for the company as it gears up for its entry into the Japanese market and the establishment of a production facility in Korea. The success story of Sweet-bio is closely tied to its flagship brand, 'Greek Day', which emerged from a humble 10-square-meter store near Ewha Womans University in 2016. The brand's unique offering of Greek yogurt bowls, topped with a variety of fruits, nuts, and honey, quickly gained popularity among young consumers, positioning Greek Day as a leading player in the yogurt market. With a focus on product quality and emotive marketing strategies, Sweet-bio has seen remarkable financial growth in recent years. The company achieved sales figures of ₩2.8 billion ($2 million) in 2020, ₩18 billion ($13 million) in 2021, and ₩26.1 billion ($19 million) in 2023, reflecting an impressive average annual growth rate of 74% over the past three years.
