Have you ever wondered why it's so hard for nonprofit organizations to work together, share resources, and form partnerships? A recent survey asked this very question, and the responses were quite insightful. Some of the reasons given were differing missions and goals, limited resources, communication challenges, lack of trust, and power imbalances. It's a bit ironic, isn't it? In an industry dedicated to helping others, organizations often find themselves guarding their own little slice of the pie. But here's the good news – it doesn't always have to be that way! There are many wonderful organizations out there that are willing to lend a hand, share their knowledge, and offer assistance. And for that, we are truly grateful. Speaking of which, there's one local organization that deserves a special shout-out: Thrive Alabama. Led by the amazing Mary Elizabeth Marr, this organization has been an absolute gem. While their mission aligns with ours to some extent, they have gone above and beyond to support us with their kindness and expertise. So, if you're a Huntsville resident in need of medical care and don't know where to turn, Thrive Alabama is the place to start your search. Here's a glimpse into their mission and values: https://lnkd.in/gxbEqVev Let's spread the word about Thrive Alabama and organizations like them that truly embody the spirit of collaboration and compassion. Food insecurity is a growing concern across Pinellas County. We are honored to work with Daystar Life Center, Inc. through our #projecttryton initiative. According to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap 2020 study, which used data from 2018: Pinellas County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.2% (124,430 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.1% (38,080 children) Hillsborough County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.6% (178,820 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.5% (61,600 children) It's important to note that these numbers are from before the COVID-19 pandemic, which likely exacerbated food insecurity in these counties and across the United States. Feeding America projected that the overall food insecurity rate for the United States could have reached up to 15.6% in 2020 due to the economic impact of the pandemic. #endhunger

Partnering with local media can be invaluable in raising awareness of hospice funding challenges. It also helps mobilise support from the local community. Bolton Hospice worked with an Editor to secure a weekly spot in their local newspaper. Each issue shared hospice stories with the public, addressing misconceptions and highlighting the importance of hospice services. Want to do something similar at your hospice? I have been watching with keen interest all the LinkedIn posts from many ex-colleagues about the move-in process as the Midland Met Hospital opened its doors to staff, visitors and patients over the weekend. It seems like a remarkably well planned and managed transition, and I am really pleased for those involved. I also applaud Balfour Beatty plc for completing the project from the graveyard it once inhabited. Sadly however, such a well-run process should not overshadow or allow people to forget what came before, which was probably one of the worst public-private partnership procurements ever witnessed by the industry, where 2 of the 3 bidding consortia walked away leaving the Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust to negotiate a contract with Carillion. Everyone thought that Carillion could not lose from this position. By the time financial close and start on site was occurring in January 2016, the cracks in the company were already there for all to see. Within 2 years the project was reported as being 17m pounds over the contract price Carillion negotiated and was significantly delayed, which contributed towards the liquidation of the parent company. Upon liquidation it was clear the facts were far worse than had been reported. Now we sit here the day after the NHS Trust has moved in and I reflect on the procurement meetings with the NHS Trust almost 10 years ago to the day. They chose arrogance over collaboration as the NHS Project Director and CEO at the time laughed off the private sector concerns (yes, I mean actually laughing at us). The result? A project that has taken 10 years to complete and a construction bill way in excess of one billion pounds. A somber lesson to show that dismissing private sector concerns can lead to a costly outcome and that the only way complex projects should be procured is through collaboration, not ignorance.
The Midland Met has opened its doors to our population. Chairman of the Trust Sir David Nicholson said of the historic moment: “It takes a village to raise a child, and for us a community to raise this hospital. "We are so proud of what everyone has done, and today as we treat our first patients in this building, it is testament to what can be achieved when we are all focussed on a single aim." My heart wrenched as I watched this video. It was a hard video to watch, especially when Andrew answered the question: Do you want to die at home or in a hospice?" A powerful reminder of hospices' vital work in providing compassionate care during difficult times. I asked myself what was it like for Andrew to make that video. In those first few seconds, you could see a change in his expression as he answered, realising that whatever brought him to St Francis Hospice - who are very good, by the way - his situation was undeniably real. It's a tough place to be. Watching this video made me reflect on how often we are encouraged to be grateful for even the slightest things. While this is a good practice, I invite you to take this further. Consider this: Are you noticing what you are constantly thinking about? Are you replaying past situations, incidents or comments that hurt you? Do you continue to relive it? Because stress is widely recognised as a significant factor contributing to many illnesses. Notice what you are thinking about and ask yourself if those thoughts are serving you to live a happier life. Is it worth it? As morbid as it sounds, the Stoics had a phrase worth remembering: memento mori—remember you will die - as a profound reminder of our mortality and the impermanence of life. I repeat it to myself whenever I notice I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Make the most of your week ahead.
We've been privileged to speak to Andrew, one of the individuals we're currently caring for, and we've been blown away by his honesty and his love and support for the hospice. In this video, Andrew talks about what his hopes for the hospice are. Thank you Andrew for being so candid and for sharing your time with us 🧡 If you also want to read Andrew's story 📖 we've shared it on our website https://lnkd.in/e5J5HDYZ #40thAnniversary

As cited by Korah, Nunbogu and Ahmed (2023): “Equitable access to health care for everyone is a fundamental goal of the SDGs (UN, 2015). However, there are marked spatial inequalities in healthcare access in Ghana (Peprah, Budu, Agyemang-Duah, Abalo, & Gyimah, 2020; Stewart et al., 2016; Yawson et al., 2017). Recently, a number of initiatives have been made to lessen these access to healthcare disparities. Prominent among these are the free maternal health care program (Witter, Adjei, Armar-Klemesu, & Graham, 2009; Azaare, Akweongo, Aryeetey, & Dwomoh, 2020; Dalinjong et al., 2018a, Dalinjong et al., 2018b), the national health insurance scheme to eliminate financial obstacles that restrict access to and utilization of healthcare (Dixon, Luginaah, & Mkandawire, 2014; Witter & Garshong, 2009), and the construction of health infrastructure to serve deprived areas. Despite these interventions, available evidence has established a strong relationship between socio-economic inequalities and healthcare access and utilization in Ghana (Fenny, Asuman, Crentsil, & Odame, 2018; Kuuire, Bisung, Rishworth, Dixon, & Luginaah, 2016; Novignon, Ofori, Tabiri, & Pulok, 2019). Even when health facilities are available, geographic accessibility – defined here as the distance and time spent accessing health facilities – has been identified as a critical challenge (Agbenyo, Marshall Nunbogu, & Dongzagla, 2017; Ashiagbor, Ofori-Asenso, Forkuo, & Agyei-Frimpong, 2020).” We are privileged at ResQ World to contribute to ongoing efforts to improve access to healthcare in the nation through our free medical screening efforts. #healthcare #communitydevelopment Prosper Issahaku Korah, Abraham Marshall Nunbogu, Abubakari Ahmed, Measuring access to health facilities in Ghana: Implications for implementation of health interventions and the Sustainable Development Goal 3, Applied Geography, Volume 158, 2023, 103026, ISSN 0143-6228, https://lnkd.in/evzNhTpb. To the glory of God, our urban missions took place as scheduled. It was rewarding to see beaming smiles on the faces of both children and adults, as we demonstrated the matchless love of God to members of the Pokuase-River side estate community through sharing of the Gospel, free health screening and clothe bank. It was a time of deep reflection and joy for volunteers, as participants went through free health screening and were spoilt for choice at the clothe bank section. We are very grateful to our medical and non medical volunteers, our partners and all other stakeholders who made this possible. We look forward to another impactful engagement during our rural outreach in June. Details will be communicated as soon as possible. It will be a delight to have you join us once again or for the first time when the time comes.

Today is Social Prescribing Day. Many things that affect our health can’t be treated by doctors or medicine alone. Social prescribing often begins with a referral from a GP, hospital, charity or other organisation to a Social Prescribing Link Worker. Speak to your GP about social prescribing. #SocialPrescribingDay #HealthyLiving #PrivateHealthcare
