ICAE 2024: Warming up for our exciting upcoming international conference. Register Now! https://lnkd.in/d4-HDfMi Note from the ICAE 2024 Program Chair, and IAAE President-Elect: In about three months from now, IAAE’s Cowbell will ring to mark the formal opening of the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) to be held in New Delhi, India (2-7 August 2024). We are all very excited to meet again for this conference in-person for the first time after six years. As you know, ICAE is a triennial conference, but in 2021 it had to be held virtually due to the pandemic. It is really high time for an in-person international jamboree of agricultural economists. The conference theme “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems” could not be more topical. Ideas on how to achieve global food and nutrition security and improve people’s wellbeing and resilience within the planetary boundaries are urgently needed. Our profession has a key role to play in terms of coming up with such ideas and helping to implement them at various scales. ICAE 2024 will be a landmark event for taking stock of what our agricultural economics profession has to offer in this regard. We are putting together a truly exciting program with an excellent and diverse lineup of speakers, including many renowned scholars and rising stars from all parts of the world. In addition to the names and topics of the plenary sessions, invited panels, and pre-conference workshops, which can already be found on the ICAE 2024 website, we have accepted around 500 contributed papers, 360 contributed posters, and 58 Organized Symposia after a competitive peer-review process. Thanks to the generous support of various sponsors, we can also allocate around 120 travel grants to early-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries with accepted research contributions. Note that these travel grants go to researchers from over 30 different countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, around half of them female. On top, support will be provided to many Indian scholars to participate in ICAE 2024. ICAE 2024 will be an exciting academic event. At the same time, thanks to the hard work of the Local Organizing Committee it will be a memorable social event with plenty of opportunities for informal networking with colleagues from all parts of the world. In addition to the daily lunches and coffee breaks, there will be one opening reception, one conference dinner, organized cultural tours in Delhi and surroundings, and one additional off-site dinner – all included in the conference registration fee. See further details on the ICAE 2024 website: https://icae2024.in/home Do not forget to register for the conference soon. If you do so by 15 May 2024, you can benefit from the reduced Early-Bird Registration fee. We look forward to seeing you all in New Delhi soon. Matin Qaim IAAE President-Elect ICAE 2024 Program Chair

The University of Antwerp - Faculty of Business and Economics invites Wim Verbeke, Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at UGent, to hold the #FrancquiChair 2023-2024. Professor Verbeke, an expert in agri-food marketing and consumer behavior with a background in natural (bio-engineering) and social (economic) sciences, studies the behavior of consumers and stakeholders in the agri-food sector. In his inaugural lecture, Professor Verbeke will provide a view from the perspective of agri-food marketing and consumer research on the choices made, the evolution of the research themes and agenda, the insights gained and the new questions that arise about the protein transition. These include the rise of flexitarianism, the introduction and acceptance of alternative protein sources such as insects, microalgae or cultured meat, and diversity among consumers. The lecture, entitled “A quarter century of protein transition: insights from agri-food marketing and consumer research”, will take place on Wednesday 6 March, 15.00, at the University of Antwerp. We are happy to share that Dr. J.C. Sharmiladevi has published a paper titled, "Agricultural Value Added in BRICS: A Panel Data Study " in the International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy. The research highlights key areas for economic development, focusing on food security, agriculture, health, and sustainability in fast-growing economies like BRICS. It emphasizes the importance of ecological balance and responsible agricultural development. The paper also explores the link between agriculture, international capital flow, and globalization, as well as the role of foreign capital in driving new development policies. #SCMSPune #research #ResearchPapers #researchstudy Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/duPKwgYC SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Sharmiladevi JC

Honoured to participated along with six other agricultural and food economics journal editors in a #ICAE2024 panel on the future of publishing in agricultural economics. Major themes were further improving the diversity of representation in journals, both by gender and by country; ensuring strong ethical foundations; and improving the communication of research findings. In my own remarks I emphasised that our discipline is a "big tent" in terms of topic coverage, which extends to the most fundamental challenges facing the humanity: food security, nutrition, farmers' livelihoods, resource use, the environment and climate change. On the other hand, it is relatively focused, bringing the critical perspective of economics to these issues. We cannot find solutions without understanding how people respond to incentives, and without confronting the reality of difficult trade-offs across competing objectives. Unfortunately I see a big disconnect between insightful research at the academic "sharp end" and its uptake by policymakers. We can and must do a better job at narrowing that gap -- if not it will be filled by those proposing simplistic solutions that ignore the economic dimensions, are based on flimsy evidence, or reflect narrow political agendas. Most of the journals are -- like the JAE -- the organs of our professional societies. I believe that identity is an valuable asset for improving the impact of our research, so that new and robust insights work their way into the policy process. Thanks to my fellow panellists Sangeeta Bansal (Agricultural Economics); Jill McCluskey (American Journal of Agricultural Economic); Holly WANG (Food Policy); Jacob Ricker-Gilbert (Agricultural Economics); Paolo Sckokai (European Review of Agricultural Economics and Gopi Munisamy (Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy).

Today marked a significant milestone in my academic journey as I successfully defended my thesis on "Differences in Preferences Among Traditional vs Non-Traditional Lentil Consumers in Canada." 🌱🇨🇦 This research delves into the intricate variations in consumer preferences within the lentil market, shedding light on how traditional and non-traditional consumer segments perceive and choose lentils differently. Through rigorous analysis and insightful findings, I explored the factors influencing these preferences and their implications for the Canadian agricultural sector. I am immensely grateful to my thesis committee for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this journey. This achievement would not have been possible without the encouragement and mentorship of Dr Jill Hobbs, Dr Peter Slade Dr Simona Lubieniechi and examining Dr Yang Yang whose expertise has been instrumental in shaping my research. I look forward to continuing my contributions to the field of #agrifoodeconomics and leveraging these findings to make meaningful impacts in the agricultural and agrifood industry. 🌾 #ThesisDefense #Research #AgriculturalEconomics #ConsumerBehavior #LentilMarket #CanadianResearch #GraduateResearch #AcademicAchievement #plantProtein #UniversityofSaskatchewan #Economics #MarketResearch

How are you measuring your impact on nature? In our latest insights report, Graham Phelan draws out key insights and provides further information on this topic featured at the recent World Economic Forum Annual Meeting titled “Putting a price on nature”. It’s a rapidly growing area of work for our clients, and a complex problem we are using economics to help solve. Whether it’s re-aligning market settings to bring incentives to the farm gate, considering indigenous communities or looking at regenerative agriculture. This report may help start the process. When GDP has more than doubled in the past three decades, while natural capital has declined by nearly 40% within the same time frame, it’s an issue that should be prioritised. #biodiversity #naturalcapital #sustainability #economics

Insightful Experience at the #AESConference I have just returned from the Agricultural Economics Society's Annual #AESConference, and it was an enriching experience. The conference provided an excellent platform for researchers, professionals, and students to share their work and engage in thought-provoking discussions on various aspects of #agriculturaleconomics. The program featured a diverse range of topics, including #agriculturaltrade, #environmentaleconomics, #supplychain, #foodpolicy, #behavioraleconomics, #agriculturaladaptation, #climatechange, #livestockproduction, #agriculturaldevelopment, #technologyadoption, and the economics of #bioenergy. I had the opportunity to attend several stimulating presentations that showcased cutting-edge research and innovative approaches to addressing challenges in the #agriculturalsector. The discussions that followed were insightful and fostered a constructive exchange of ideas among attendees from different backgrounds and perspectives. Overall, the #AESConference was a fantastic #networking opportunity, allowing me to connect with #scholars, establish new #collaborations, and gain exposure to the latest developments in agricultural economics.
