📣 New interview! Sofia-Natalia Boemi shares her expertise on the energy transition with the #JUSTEM project. As the Head of the Energy and Climate Action Department in Western Macedonia, Sofia-Natalia Boemi has extensive experience working in just transition regions. Her field experience provides valuable insights into implementing fair transition strategies on the ground. 💡 #JUSTEM picked her brain on the importance of education in empowering communities as they transition away from fossil fuels and as a strategy to tackle energy poverty 📚 . "Education must serve as a tool for social mobility, enabling individuals to break out of cycles of poverty." 🔎 Sofia-Natalia was also one of the people involved in setting up Greece’s first one-stop-shop for energy poverty. One-stop shops serve as community-centered hubs, they can help get everyone on board with the just transition and ensure no one is left behind. She shared her views on how these initiatives can be a real catalyst for community empowerment and leadership and what, in her opinion, is an essential ingredient for their long-term success. ➡️ Want to know more? Energy poverty in the rural Western Balkans has been a persistent challenge, with barriers such as low awareness, lack of education, and limited access to energy efficiency programs. Through Project GETA www.getaproject.eu, we aimed to address these issues by empowering youth workers to become energy advisors and equipping them to guide rural youth toward a smarter energy future. Over the course of the project, we developed tools, introduced innovative training schemes, and laid the groundwork for a sustainable energy transition in rural areas. Watch this retrospective video to revisit our journey and celebrate the impact of Project GETA! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this incredible mission. While the project may be complete, its legacy lives on in the empowered youth and communities now embracing sustainable energy practices. 🔔🆕 Just released: Our report on “Updating the energy poverty and energy efficiency framework in rural areas across the EU” produced within RENOVERTY Project is now available! Access it here🔗https://lnkd.in/d2WQGsCS This report followed a multi-step approach based on extensive desk research, a European-wide stakeholder #survey, the development of an indicator to identify vulnerable rural areas, and the conduction of more than 60 energy audits in the 7 #RENOVERTY countries to gain a comprehensive overview of the #energypoverty framework on rural and peri-urban areas. Among others, in this study we analyse: ❇ the unique characteristics of rural areas such as the unfavourable demographic structure, limited education and labour capabilities. ❇ the status of energy poverty and its special driving forces in such contexts ❇ the current relevant policy landscape at the European level ❇ barriers to and solutions for the successful design and implementation of #energyefficiency policies 👏 Many #kudos to all authors Dimitris Papantonis, Akis Apostoliotis, Dimitra Tzani, Marco Peretto, Samuele Livraghi, Stefan Bouzarovski, Valerija Vrček Habazin, Slavica Robic and Dr. Alexandros Flamos for this excellent work! #LIFEProgramme #LIFEProject #RePowerEU #justtransition #ruralrevival #sustainableenergy #climatechange #energypolicy #energytransition Climate Alliance | Focus, društvo za sonaraven razvoj / Focus Association for Sustainable Development | European LEADER Association for Rural Development - ELARD | Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy Foundation (IEECP) | Aisfor srl | Tartu Regional Energy Agency | North West Croatia Regional Energy and Climate Agency (REGEA) | Universidade de Coimbra | ISR-UC UC | LIFE Programme | CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency

"A picture is a thousand words." The paradox of beauty and destruction displayed in this photograph captured by Beverly Dupouy in today's Daily Maverick online news demonstrates how Mother Nature is at war with human inhabitants on a daily basis. South Africa's Long term Low-Emissions Development Strategy, it's updated Nationally Determined Contribution and Just Energy Transition Invest Plan 2022 - 2027 are all part of the nation's movement towards supporting UNSDGs especially 12 (Responsible Consumption and production) and 13 (Climate Action). 🌟 Athens Unveils New Plan to Help Energy-Poor Households 🌟 Athens is setting a new standard for cities across Europe by eliminating municipal fees for energy-poor households, including vulnerable groups such as those with disabilities and single-parent families. This initiative, introduced by Athens mayor, Mr. Haris Doukas, represents a major step toward equitable energy solutions, aligning with the Climate City Contract (CCC) of Athens, namely a Green Social Contract to create a more humane city, strengthen its social cohesion, improve its neighbourhoods, and reduce spatial inequalities. In this framework, the ASSERT Project, aims to equip local policymakers and intermediaries with the tools they need to effectively address energy poverty, and enable vulnerable families to manage their energy needs more efficiently. 🌍🏙️ Learn more about the project and similar initiatives here: https://lnkd.in/dPFA348C Aisfor srl Rete Assist National Technical University of Athens Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy Foundation (IEECP) Ecoserveis Cultura Energètica Banco dell'energia European Network on Independent Living Cyprus Energy Agency Climate Alliance Eurac Research Enercoop LIFE Programme CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #EuropeanProjects #EnergyVulnerability #LIFECET

Despite the continent’s low contributions to global carbon emissions, Africa faces an urgent energy demand that is expected to grow significantly over the coming decades. With an increasing population and rapidly urbanizing society, the need for reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy in Africa has never been more pressing. In this episode of Cities 1.5, David speaks with two urban climate leaders about the critical issue of energy access in Africa, diving deep into the devastating legacy the fossil fuel industry has left across the African continent. Explore how city leaders from diverse communities across this part of the world are fighting to facilitate energy access through innovative local policies to achieve a healthy, sustainable, equitable, future for all residents. Host David Miller is joined by Hilda Flavia Nakabuye, youth climate, gender and environmental rights activist and founder of the Uganda chapter of Fridays for Future, and Dorah Modise, Regional Director for Africa at C40, sustainability enthusiast and expert. David Miller is the host of Cities 1.5 and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy. Cities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and supports the mission of the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy. The pathway to achieving the Net-zero Carbon Emissions and Climate resilience 2050 especially in Africa is in #ActivelyEngaging young people at #AllLevels to ensure that * Active participation in climate action endeavours to have Resource persons for the next generation. * we have knowledgeable young actors engaging in every of the 20% of the 20 sectors in economy. * we can stand heads and shoulders and achieve with the rest of the world. Mindful of the fact that, we are the youngest continent with over 75% of our 1.3billion pop below 30. This means in 25years from now, our African Gen Zs and Gen Alphas will be in their rubies and golden years. Be it nature-base solutions or human ingenuity, encouraging young people to build interest in #climateActions at all levels is key. As one living in one of the armed conflict zones of Cameroon, now witnessing conflicts between landfill sites of local waste management company and local communities, i have observed young people; toddlers, teenagers and young adults hyped and embraced the #Subtle engagement of Net-zero Emissions in the fashion industry from well renowned foreign brands yet completely #Oblivious to its reality in my exchanges with most on the subject. @Abilities for Change Cameroon, we currently have pilot projects in their last phases in partnership with local adminstrators from Ministry of Environment Nature Protection and Sustainable Development #Minepded aimed at engaging kindergarden kids and students to build interest climate actions and conversations. #EducateEquipExcel achaleke christian leke Sinke Henshaw Osong, PhD Leslie E.
