👏 I am very proud to announce that Cefic’s "Safe and Sustainable-by-Design: A guidance to unleash the transformative power of #innovation" is out: a big milestone and again a clear indication of the chemical industry’s commitment to a sustainable future! Cefic’s guidance on SSbD lays out a practical approach, designed by innovators for innovators, to innovate and design with safety and #sustainability in mind from the very beginning. It’s an important tool that supports companies in understanding, testing, and implementing SSbD principles. I recommend companies to test our SSbD guidance to guide their innovation process with respect to safety and sustainability (while keeping the respective performance and competitiveness in mind as well) A huge thanks to everyone who made this guidance happen! It comes at a crucial time for our industry: Supporting EU #GreenDeal goals for the chemical industry represents a double twin (green and digital) transition for our sector. We need to go through this transition all while remaining competitive to ensure a thriving, economically viable chemical industry in Europe. This guidance is here to help! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ebgiycBg #safeandsustainablebydesign #greentransition #digitaltransition Cefic Eva-Kathrin Schillinger Ann Dierckx Dr. Wibke Lölsberg Marina Videira Mendes

https://lnkd.in/dm-VQyPP <<Cefic and its members have previously defined SSbD as an iterative process guiding innovation and market placement of solutions that are safe, and offer environmental, societal, and/or economical value. This includes new chemicals, materials, products, processes and services, as well as the potential redesign of existing ones based on a suggested Portfolio Sustainability Analysis as defined by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The new guidance builds on this understanding and proposes steering design principles for assessing safety and sustainability right from the innovation design stage. >> #sustainability #analysis #CEFIC #innovation #guidance #societal #market #SSbD #development #opportunties #CIOSUERD #safety #chemical #design #worldbusinesscouncil #companies #ESG

TNO is developing an innovative Decision Support System to help companies to develop products that are Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD). TNO's SSbD approach: The innovation approach aims to empower companies to take informed decisions based on the integration of health, safety, sustainability, functionality and cost impacts early in the innovation process. 1. Defining design criteria: For the intended use of the chemical, material or product 2. Quick screening: On all SSbD aspects (health, safety, sustainability, functionality and cost) within the SSbD decision support tool based on available information, data and modeling 3. Visualisation: Integration of impact on SSbD aspects and visualisation of trade-offs 4. Decision making: Based on transparent visualisation and scenario testing. If needed, more detailed evaluation of one or more SSbD aspects can be performed e.g. by additional data gathering, (in vitro) testing, advanced modeling to reduce uncertainties and support decision making Great work by Wouter Fransman and Hedwig Braakhuis. Navigating Innovation and Regulation: Insights from HMG Paints Ltd Talk Last Thursday I attended the final talk held by Paul Sheppard of HMG Paints Ltd and OIL & COLOUR CHEMISTS' ASSOCIATION which focused on the concept of a product to the product realisation development and the regulatory landscape around it. Sheppard started off by explaining how many future concepts and products can come about within the academic landscape by using the example of graphene, which was first discovered in the University of Manchester. He mentioned that when new concepts come about it is due to new technologies and new customer requirements which are gaps in the market. However, due to regulations on materials it is difficult to break the cycle and introduce new chemicals into the industry such as cyrene which is a greener alternative to DMF,NMP and DMSO. Companies are more willing to reuse the same chemical and material providers than going off the beaten path and investing into new alternatives. The latter part of the talk delved into the ramifications of Brexit on companies like HMG Paints and OCCA. Brexit brought about additional regulatory burdens alongside existing EU standards like REACh, CLP, and BPR, significantly altering trade dynamics. Moreover, Sheppard touched upon the ongoing efforts in Advancements to Technical Progress, crucial for ensuring the safety and appropriate classification of chemicals. Reflecting on the session, I found it to be an intriguing fusion of my passion for chemistry with the practical realities of the industry, providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within the field.

Supply chain sustainability for life sciences The supply chain makes up a significant proportion of the environmental impact of the life sciences industry, with manufacture, materials, transport and waste presenting huge sustainability issues. Here, Mohammed Ahmed, regional sales manager at automation supplier, COPA-DATA, explore how manufacturers can rethink their supply chains to meet sustainability goals while maintaining resilience and adhering to regulations. The life sciences and pharmaceutical industries are undoubtedly essential in modern society, providing crucial healthcare and scientific products. However, these operations can have significant environmental impacts. Sourcing and supply of raw materials, manufacturing processes, transport and storage all bring their own unique sustainability challenges. Though pharmaceutical manufacturers are implementing new strategies to improve their green credentials, there is still room for improvement. #news #engineering #magazine COPA-DATA https://lnkd.in/eK5zCcRQ

I sat down with Manufacturing Chemist recently to discuss the power of forward-thinking and collaboration in achieving sustainability goals within the pharmaceutical industry. We talked about how companies can greatly benefit from forming external partnerships rather than trying to shoulder all responsibilities internally. This strategy involves seeking out technology partners, suppliers, logistics firms, and recyclers who share a similar vision for a sustainable future.
