The Predistribution Initiative is pleased to co-organize a community-building session on Wednesday, October 16 from 15:00 hrs to 16:30 hrs ET to discuss the trajectory of today’s growing ownership lens investing movement in North America.  Over the last year, there have been a number of convenings focused on various investment and financing strategies to build wealth and influence for workers and communities across the US. These strategies range from shared ownership (of enterprise and real assets) to individual ownership (e.g., homes, stocks) and beyond (e.g., blockchain, crypto). Across convenings, stakeholders have expressed interest in continuity of programming and coordination to maintain momentum, map ecosystems, foster collaboration, and facilitate an understanding of actors’ unique value propositions. Since early 2024, several volunteer organizations have been brainstorming the proposed fundamentals of what this movement might need and are pleased to invite you to attend an interactive session to widen the discussion. Momentum is building for everyone who is interested in investing with an ownership lens. The outcomes are clear, it is positive for individuals, their communities and societies as a whole. Looking through this lens is different to a typical investors lens though. Most people invest by following the herd; The reality is that the real impact is made by the contrarians. This gathering is a collective, pivotal conversation, where we'll discuss as a group how to collaborate, and what needs can be filled by a central organizing body. At its core, social innovation is about empathy and human-centered design. Moreover, social innovation thrives on adaptability and iteration, embracing failure as a stepping stone to success. Through a mindset of experimentation and continuous learning, we can refine and improve our solutions, staying agile in the face of change. The most interesting part of social innovation for me is in most cases this is as a result of failure of something or lack of products/resources that pushes and fuels the need for change and innovation. Transparency: Public Oversight: Alternative communities can serve as tools for public oversight, promoting transparency through active citizen participation in processes that were previously closed or inaccessible for public discussion. This increases trust in the system through openness. Innovation and Technology: Utilizing blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies for transparent financial operations and transactions can reduce corruption and enhance accountability. Security: Social Security: Communities united around shared values or interests can provide an environment where individuals feel supported and secure, especially during crises. Psychological Safety: Receiving support and having the opportunity to discuss issues within such communities contributes to psychological comfort, which is critical for societal health. Significance: Decentralization: Alternative communities facilitate the decentralization of power and information, reducing the risks of totalitarianism and excessive control by a single entity. Innovation and Development: These communities can become laboratories for social innovations where new models of governance, financing, and communication are developed and tested. This concept not only underscores the importance of civic engagement and transparency in governance but also demonstrates how technological capabilities can be harnessed to strengthen security and trust within society. Alternative communities open the path to a new form of social organization, where every participant has the opportunity to influence the processes around them, thereby creating a more resilient and open society.
