My colleague SIMON PRENDERGAST and I attended the Electricity Engineers' Association of New Zealand Conference at Te Pae, Christchurch last week - our first! It was inspiring to see the incredible innovation and mahi from our Electricity Distribution Businesses (EDBs) while also aligning with the challenges of building a sustainable, resilient infrastructure. The next 5 to 10 years will be pivotal for strategic asset management. An electric future is critical to Aotearoa New Zealand achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and it’s essential to keep our people front and centre on this road to decarbonisation. As New Zealand's only Toitū Envirocare, Net Zero Recycling provider for end-of-life energy assets from generation to distribution, we’re prepped and ready to provide our range of services as the nation upgrades to meet increasing electrical demand. This was my first EEA Conference, and it was a great opportunity to connect in person with many CEOs, directors, project managers, and asset and supply planners from across New Zealand. We also discussed opportunities with other EDBs and energy asset owners. We value our existing clients immensely and take on a product stewardship role on their behalf, diverting end-of-life Energy assets from landfill and back into the circular economy throughout New Zealand. If you’d like to join us or learn more, feel free to reach out here on LinkedIn, email me directly (julian@pmrnz.co.nz), or check out our Energy sector services at https://lnkd.in/gpVU3d_b. Let us do what we do well ensuring you are able to do what you do well! It is always interesting to hear how others perceive you. And WindEnergy Hamburg was the perfect place to ask the industry about just that. We spoke with Vice President of Business Development at NorSea Denmark, Lars Skov C. He had this to say: "With the new expansion of Odense Port, the port is becoming really interesting — especially as a production port, and what we call a marshalling port. And Odense Port is really good in this area because they have a lot of space, and they can accommodate all the big things. They can have the foundations, the turbines, and the nacelles. And they are willing to make the investment before the work comes. And that willingness is what they will win on." #WeEmbraceaGrowingWorld #OffshoreWind

🌟 Feel Good Friday🌟 We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the success of our beneficiary, Sealand Projects Ltd as they share the positive results of their Decarbonisation of Offshore Wind Vessel Traffic project! 🌊 Their cutting-edge software helps analyse vessel data from offshore wind farms to estimate carbon footprints and fuel consumption within 15% of actual usage! Here’s how their innovative software can help operators uncover critical insights to accelerate decarbonisation efforts: 🚢 Reducing transport speed (from port to offshore windfarm): Reducing transit speeds by just 5 knots can save up to 500 tonnes of CO2e annually, depending on the site. 📅 Smarter planning: Improved weather planning, maintenance scheduling and reducing workdays can save 10,000-20,000 litres of fuel and cut CO2 emissions by up to 50 tonnes! ⚙️Engine optimisation: Utilising vessels with ~1000kW engines instead of ~2000kW where possible can lead to over 50% reduction of fuel use and therefore carbon emissions. ⏱️ Time saving tweaks: Reducing transfer time by 30 mins per workday can lead to an 8%-15% reduction in fuel consumption. This project demonstrates what’s possible with smart tech, efficient operations, and a commitment to decarbonisation. Congratulations to the team at Sealand Projects! #FeelGoodFriday #Sustainability #OffshoreWind #Innovation #Decarbonisation

HOCHTIEF is going for the fast charging revolution in Germany 🚀! Hochtief has just started work on Germany's fast-charging network. Together with EWE Go, it will finance, plan, build and operate a network with a total of 850 fast charging points for electric cars. With this project, which represents a revolution in the country, we continue to reinforce the ACS Group's commitment to the #energytransition and #sustainablemobility. This project not only facilitates electric mobility, but also promotes the use of #renewable energies, reducing the carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future. With each fast charging point, we are one step closer to a world where mobility and sustainability go hand in hand. Want to know more details? ◾ All recharging points are supplied with 100% green electricity. ◾ Depending on their size, they have from 4 to 16 charging points each. ◾ Each charging point has a capacity of at least 200 kW. DeepWind member, Haventus Limited , have kicked off the development of our largest port site at Ardersier Port with an initial 650m quayside project. Ardersier is part of the Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport and one of Freeport’s major tax sites. The video below also shows the proposed manufacturing base for one of our other members, BW Ideol’s concrete floating foundations which, so far, is the only floating wind substructure facility to have secured such a site. Even though the BW Ideol manufacturing facility would have a significant footprint it is, in turn, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the 450 acre Ardersier site. Ardersier is leading the way with the use of concrete for floating wind substructures but is only the first of a number of such sites in Scotland. While many developers are looking at steel substructures most have at least one concrete option in their shortlist. With a supply chain that is almost 100% local content and a strong track record in the oil and gas industry, concrete is a strong contender as a construction material for floating wind. DeepWind is planning to repeat our Concrete Substructures event from October last year, again, just ahead of this years Floating Offshore Wind 2024 event in Aberdeen. Will we see you there? #floatingwind #scotwind #celticsea #energytransition #oilandgas #scotland #concrete #portinfrastructure
With construction now well underway at Ardersier Port, Haventus Limited CEO, Lewis Gillies explains the short- and long-term ambitions for the #EnergyTransition facility, and the fundamentals behind the development of what will be the country’s largest dedicated #OffshoreWind deployment site. Watch the video below to hear Lewis introduce Haventus and how we plan to support the UK and Scotland’s energy transition and #NetZero goals. Earlier this week, on the Brittany Ferries ferry back to Portsmouth from a month in France, I was reminded of one of the incredibly exciting maritime decarbonisation initiatives Ricardo plc is involved in (see below 🔽a photo of the banner I came across whilst on board). Part of the Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure competition (ZEVI), Sea Change is assisting ports across the UK to deliver demonstration projects for maritime. At Portsmouth, The Sea Change Project plans to accelerate the achievement of these commitments by converting some of its busiest berths to utilise shorepower, whereby larger vessels can switch off their engines and run onboard systems with green energy. With Ricardo plc having worked with Portsmouth Port as part of the Connected Places Catapult project 'Ports as Energy Hubs' modelling the port's future energy system, it is brilliant to see some of these decarbonisation options come to fruition. Shorepower can unlock flexibility and decarbonisation benefits but comes with practical challenges, namely its compatibility with a ports facilities and other fuel systems, high capital costs, consistency of demand, and feasible access to the required energy capacities required to meet the potential demand. The combination of captive renewable generation on or offsite and battery storage can help alleviate some of those constraints, and at Ricardo we are uniquely placed to advise ports owners, operators and users on project screening all the way down to procurement and engineering.
