Out of the blue: 7 land reclamation projects re-shaping the world Twenty years ago, Dubai’s plan to build Palm Jumeirah, a huge palm tree shaped artificial archipelago of luxury hotels and villas in the Arabian Gulf sounded too audacious to be true. Since then, the success of ambitious artificial islands like the Palm and advances in the dredging technology used to create it, have helped fuel a rush of new land reclamation projects. On this day in 1756: John Loudon McAdam was born. John Loudon McAdam was a Scottish civil engineer and road-builder. He invented a new process, "macadamisation", for building roads with a smooth hard surface, using controlled materials of mixed particle size and predetermined structure, that would be more durable and less muddy than soil-based tracks. Modern road construction still reflects McAdam's influence. Of subsequent improvements, the most significant was the introduction of tar (originally coal tar) to bind the road surface's stones together, "tarmac" (for Tar Macadam.)

Our latest project update!
Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway update: Check out the latest construction progress on Te Ahu a Turanga, the new road we're building in Manawatū-Whanganui over the Ruahine Range to provide a safe, resilient, and efficient route between Woodville and Ashhurst. In this flyover you'll see layers of black asphalt for the first time – as you'll see, pavement work is in full swing. At Parahaki Bridge, the bridge deck between the south abutment and the first pier is almost connected, which is a huge milestone for the 300-metre-long bridge. We've also put the first flyover we did back in May 2021 in the corner of the screen so you can see just how much has been achieved over the past three years. The new highway is due to be finished by the middle of 2025. You can keep up to date with our work on Te Ahu a Turanga by signing up to our email newsletter. I observed in Norway several time such black white welds on touristic safety infrastructure (e.g. handrails). I am quite amazed about that, and it seems there is no increase in corrosion at the joint. Consider that in Norway it is raining (too) often, these constructions are far way from salt-spray and air polution is in the fjordland no problem. In other words; there is no electrolyte. What do you think about this safety construction? Imagine this at a mediterranean seaside.

🚧 New Project Update: Motutara Road, Muriwai 🚧 Within our most recent scoop of work, we began a very significant project for both us and the community in Muriwai on Motutara Road. We faced the challenge of carefully removing a home that had been severely affected by the wrath of Cyclone Gabrielle. Two main factors contributed to the complexity of successfully completing this project, including: 🍃 1. The dangerous position of a collapsing cabin - posing a threat to surrounding neighbours. 🍃 2. The high level of asbestos-contaminated materials due to exposed asbestos caused by damage from a landslide. Given these challenges, before any work began, we carefully developed a collaborative, site-specific methodology to ensure not only the successful removal of the cabin but also the safety of all parties involved. To manage the risks of asbestos, we brought in specialised surveyors and asbestos removal professionals. They have been on-site continuously monitoring the environment, assessing potential hazards, and implementing crucial safety measures. Their expertise is vital in ensuring our workers, surrounding neighbours, and the local community remain safe throughout the process. Take a look at the methodology in action! #SafetyFirst #AsbestosRemoval #Deconstruction #Sitespecifc #Methodology #Healthandsaftey

Here’s a great aerial flyover video showing the progress we’re making on the O Mahurangi Alliance in Auckland. Some highlights this year include moving 780,000 cubic metres of earth, installing 295 metres of drainage pipes, installing 1216 metres of pipe culverts (the channels that help guide water away from a road), pouring more than 3000 cubic metres of concrete for the Wēiti River Bridge support structure, and placing the beams, pouring the deck, and installing the barriers on Duck Creek Road Bridge. In the flyover you'll see the progress on the future State Highway 19 alignment, the future Wēiti River Bridge, and where the road will connect in at Whangaparāoa. SH19 will be a new seven-kilometre road between Whangaparāoa Road and SH1 that'll improve the resilience of Auckland’s state highways and get people where they need to be faster, while supporting economic growth in the region and connecting people to new housing developments. [Our own way 🙌] A high-level project! 🚠 In Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital, our teams are working in consortium with POMA to build an unprecedented project for the Group: cable car lines in the heart of the city. This cable transport will enhance mobility for residents and tourists in an urban area congested with traffic. The first line, stretching 8.76 km (about 5.5 miles), is set to be delivered in 2025 and will eventually be able to transport up to 40,000 passengers daily. This economically competitive and low-carbon alternative will facilitate travel in the city situated high above sea level. For this project, COLAS Madagascar is putting on full display the wide range of its various specialties. Nearly 450 employees are being mobilized to work on utility diversion, deep foundations, civil engineering for the pylons, buildings, and the installation of the cable cars. A big round of applause for our teams! We’re proud to be playing a part in supporting the development of urban gondola lifts with this emblematic project.
